“PUT AWAY THE EVIL” [1 Cor 5:13]

“But now I am writing you not to associate with anyone named a brother who is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or verbally abusive, a drunkard or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person… Put away the evil person from among yourselves.” vs11-13

The fact that we are to “put away” evil people means that we MUST judge people by their conduct, as well as confession. No man is to be admitted to the assembly of the saints, if he doesn’t believe in the resurrection - the fact that he has risen with Christ to live a brand new life [Rom 6:11, 22]. If he refuses the doctrine of holiness, then forbid him baptism: he is not a member of the body of Christ. If he confesses the creed but doesn’t live the life, then rebuke him, and bring him to obedience. If, however, he will not repent, then he must go [Matt 18:15-18]. The gospel cannot be sullied by his behavior.

The unbeliever is to hear the gospel, but when you claim the Matchless Name, then there are obligations, and we must not take His name in vain. This man in 1 Cor 5 was put out, so that he might come back. He was excommunicated and shunned, so that he’d be ashamed, taste the power of Satan, and repent. It seems he repented, as Paul says in 2 Cor 2:6-7, “The punishment inflicted by the majority is sufficient for that person. As a result, you should instead forgive and comfort him. Otherwise, this one may be overwhelmed by excessive grief.”

The purpose was never to cause pain and do damage (we are not running around trying to be “holier than thou”), but it was to honor the gospel, and it was for this person’s good [1 Cor 5:5]. When he repented, he’s to be received, and when sinners repent, they’re to be welcomed with open arms [2 Cor 2:8]. Let the prostitute and the pastor’s wife, sit side by side at Lord’s Supper, confessing transformation. Let Rahab the harlot ascend into our Lord’s bloodline! Let Ruth the Moabitess, Tamar who played the harlot, and the adulteress Bathsheba be there also [Matt 1:3-6]. Christ died for sinners, and He loves to receive them, but let us honor the Name once we take it.

If your brother sins, then rebuke him. We are not to be finger pointers but helpers. However, if he won’t receive it, then put him out, lest Christ leave the assembly because of unholiness. He says, “Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast permeates the whole batch of dough [1 Cor 5:7]?” The gospel has claims on us, and we better acknowledge them. Look to Christ as one risen from the dead, or do not pretend to be Christian.

The gospel is the power of God, and this is more than theoretical; it is actual power to live a new life, and do what we cannot do. He promised us a new heart and His Spirit; and by these we walk in new covenant obedience. He says, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes and to carefully observe My ordinances [Ezek 36:26-27].”
