“TOO HEAVY FOR ME” [Ps 38]

“For my sins have flooded over my head; they are a burden too heavy for me to bear.” vs4

When our sins become a burden TOO HEAVY to bear, then there is hope [vs1-8]! Many think this is the end of hope, but it is only the beginning! When we’re sick of ourselves and cannot correct it, then we turn to the Lord. When we’re deceived no longer, and we have a sin problem, we are close to being healed.

What is living in new life but an acknowledgement that sin is too dreadful to be endured, and so we run to Christ constantly? What is the fear of the Lord, except staying near to Him, because sin is too unbearable? When we think we’re strong, we fall, but when we know sin is the greatest of our problems, then we turn to the Lord for help, and He pardons and gives strength to overcome. We think, “I’m a sinner, so let me stay away”, but when we can’t stay away, then we’ll be healed. We think, “Let me get rid of this”, but when we’ve struggled and failed, then we come to Him, and He delivers. Do not be discouraged by hopelessness in yourself.

Secondly, there is no one else that can help us [vs11]. “My loved ones and friends stand back from my affliction, and my relatives stand at a distance.” We have a problem that can’t be cured by anyone else. No amount of kissing from the husband can wipe this away! We feel forsaken and utterly abandoned, unless we get to God, and this is the door of hope in the Valley of Trouble. He says, “There I will give her vineyards back to her and make the Valley of Achor into a gateway of hope. There she will respond as she did in the days of her youth, as in the day she came out of the land of Egypt [Hos 2:15].” We’ve neglected His mercies and spurned His loving embrace, only to be shown how helpless we are and without help. Man has turned away, because God has withdrawn him. Friends will not show you favor, so a Better Friend can appear, One that sticks closer than a brother. Sin leaves us all alone to mourn and wrestle with the Angel.

Don’t be discouraged! You didn’t need man’s help anyway: You needed God the whole time.

Finally, there are many who come against us - doubt, fear, and depression - as we run to the Lord, but don’t let them stop you [vs19-20]]. “But my enemies are vigorous and powerful; many hate me for no reason. Those who repay evil for good attack me for pursuing good.” Many tried to silence the two blind beggars, but Christ healed them both [Matt 20:29-34]. Naomi did all she could to discourage Ruth, but only Orpah went back. Even the disciples tried to stop a woman, but she couldn’t be stopped when she needed mercy. “She said, ‘Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table [Matt 15:27].’” Oh, little dog, eat the Master’s crumbs. Trust in the Lord.

→ You have a right to the mercies by His promises, and it is Christ who died. Take the inheritance with a fight!
