The sheer, sovereign goodness and loyal love of God toward His own is, I believe, a greatly under-appreciated fact among those who profess faith in Christ.

What else would explain how easily Christians fall into grumbling or anxiety over their circumstances? Why such resentment and fretting, if we have a settled confidence that God is indeed on His throne working out His eternal purpose for everlasting good on behalf of those for whom Christ died?

Methinks that many may affirm His kindness in outward doctrinal formula, but in their hearts lies an unrecognized and unconfessed suspicion that, in the end, Christ really doesn't have their good in mind so much after all.

Methinks further that many walk by sight, not by faith.

It is when we are most tested and pressed that we most need to come back to His goodness and in quietness of heart simply rest in Who He is, rather than agitate over what is at stake.

Methinks that, anyway.

"For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in lovingkindness to all who call upon You" (Psalm 86:5).
