In Revelation 16 we see the vials poured out on the earth as God’s providential judgments upon its inhabitants. What men attribute to natural disasters or ‘mother nature’, are rather from the sovereign hand of God: [bodily sores, v.2; environmental disasters, vv. 3,4; fire and heat, v. 8; pain and plagues, vv. 10,11; droughts and military campaigns, v.12; even miracle workers are listed among God’s judgments, vv. 13,14], God uses them to seal many in their condemnation, who have no love for the Gospel, but crave miracles and miracle-working, 2 Thess. 2:9-11. The ultimate and final judgment against sinners outside of Christ in false religion is described in vv.15-21 as the fall of Babylon (all idolatrous will worship) and the battle of Armageddon, v.16.The significance of Armageddon has been a puzzle to scholars, as the name signifies a mountain, whereas the place indicated is really a valley. The fact that no actual mountain exists at Megiddo ought to be taken as a hint, that perhaps some spiritual or figurative mountain is intended, not a real mountain in Palestine.The Hebrew name signifies a mountain, as some translations make clear. Megiddo is a valley, or a plain, not a mountain. ‘Har-Magedon,’ then, must refer to a symbolic one, and alludes to the mountains that are symbolic of God’s promises, covenants, prophecies, and revelations, all of which are the spiritual inheritance of God’s true Israel, the redeemed in Christ. The battle is spiritual, and involves deceived people, who, being confronted with the Gospel of Christ, fight against Him and the glory due His name, Psalm 2:1,2. None who resist the LORD Jesus and His righteous work of salvation can survive. Outside of His finished work of salvation at Calvary, all others stand eternally condemned.
