There is another thing that spreads. It is called grace. We hear of this “contagious grace” in a passage like 2 Corinthians 4:15:

For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.

There you have it. Something good spread for once.

Think about that. In the midst of a pandemic of spreading disease, and the panic it causes.

Grace. The grace of God. The almighty power, the awesome beauty, the saving free favor of God has come to us sinners. And it comes to us every day: to empower us, beautify us, keep on saving us, to bear fruit in otherwise sinful hearts and on otherwise dead limbs.

Grace spreads. Grace multiplies. Grace increases more than by ones or squares, more than exponentially.

Grace spreads divinely.

It spreads through the many who are saved and by the gospel ministry through which God graces His own. It spreads through us, and grace working through us, and through the Word of God ministered to us today.

So avoid the one, the virus that threatens, sickens, and kills.

Spread the other: by every prayer, every gospel word, every deed in the name of Christ.

In everything, starting in our little quarantined homes, spreading out to the neighborhood, to the stores, to the many struck down by the plague of plagues, the sin of man.

Grace. Grace spreading. Contagious grace. From heaven, in and through graced ones abounding in thanksgiving to the glory of God.

For such a time as this!
