It is one thing to reward evil with evil. While we would not justify it, we can at least have some sympathy and understanding. But to reward good with evil? Saul rewarded David’s valor and loyalty by seeking to murder him. It is difficult to muster any sympathy for Saul. As far away as this despicable concept may seem, it is actually very close to all of us. Is there any better descriptor for sin than rewarding evil for good? The goodness of God has been the one constant of all our lives. By His goodness, we live, move, and have our being. From His goodness come health, success, and every comfort of life. As Scripture warns, this goodness is such a constant that it becomes expected, and ingratitude results. And from a spirit of ingratitude, good is rewarded with evil. The remedy for ingratitude, of course, is gratitude. Gratitude comes from an awareness of undeserved mercy and grace in Jesus Christ and acknowledgement of the constant goodness that sustains our every moment.
