Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 10:26

“As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.” Proverbs 10:26

Recently, I listened to the sad tale of a man whose life had fallen apart. As I listened to the story of the ruin to his own life and the heartache he had brought to those closest to him, one factor became very clear. From an early age, he had never learned the necessity of being dependable. He was allowed to develop the habit of excuse making and shirking of responsibility as a child, and now as an adult, the absence of dependability had brought ruin to his life. Are you dependable? Can others count on you to fulfill your responsibilities? Do you find yourself allowing outside factors(failure of others, running out of time, don’t feel like it at the moment) to prevent you from keeping your commitments? Can your church body count on you to consistently attend services? Can God count on you to keep your commitment to obedience even in secret? Do you attribute your lack of dependability to the conclusion “well, that’s just the way I am?”

In the story of the talents in Matthew 25, Jesus clearly reveals His demeanor towards dependability and excuses. One might expect Jesus to be understanding to the man who hid his talents out of fear. Instead, Jesus calls him wicked, slothful, and unprofitable and strips the man of his talent. Jesus has never required from us more than we can reasonably perform. His expectation is not that we perform above our ability. What He does require, however, is that we not succumb to the temptation of excuses and that we do keep our commitments.
