Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 8:18-21

“Riches and honor are with me: yea, durable riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver. I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of paths of judgment: That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.” Proverbs 8:18-21

In the aftermath of the national elections, a wave of concern and fear has spread over many Americans, particularly regarding the economy. I visited recently with an individual nearing retirement who expressed great uncertainty as to what to do with their retirement account, fearing that it could all vanish in an economic collapse. Others are feverishly stocking non-perishable foods in their basements and pantries in preparation for the coming doom. While there may be legitimacy to the concerns, there is also more than a hint of irrational fear bordering on hysteria. There is a great contrast in our study passage today. To those who will listen, God promises durable riches, riches that cannot vanish. In fact, His claim is that His reward surpasses earthly riches. Instead of robbing, God will fill our treasures. He also will lead in paths of judgment. Simply stated, this means that he will provide the necessary wisdom at each moment. Do these verses provide assurance that retirement accounts, gas prices, and food supplies will continue as we now enjoy them? No, but they promise something far better. They promise God’s presence, His wisdom, and His reward (which is better than fine gold and choice silver) for any occasion. Turn off your television, close your internet browser, open God’s Word, and enjoy His presence today.
