God's people are to be a "ready" people. So many times we fail the Lord because we are not ready or prepared as we should be. My son has a favorite quote that simply says, "opportunity favors the prepared". Although a secular quote I am convinced it is quite applicable to the Christian life, and consistent with biblical truth. I want to remind you of a few things God's people need to be ready or prepared for. We are to be ready: 1. For the coming of the Lord. (Matt. 24.44-46)
For the child of God this means we are to be busy obediently doing the work He has called us to do. To be idle and disobedient is to be unprepared for His return.
2. To suffer for His name's sake. (Acts 21.13)
In today's world God's people want to enjoy the benefits of Christ without the reproach and suffering that comes with it. God's way is first the cross and then the crown, and we as His servants need to be ready for the suffering of our cross.
3. To keep our word and prior spiritual commitments. (II Co. 8.10-11/ 9.3-4)
The Corinthians were ready a year previously to help financially, but had not followed through. It seems as if they like many of God's people today, may have weakened on their commitment as time went along, but Paul sends one ahead so they will be prepared to give when he shows up.
4. To distribute or to give financially to the work of the Lord. (I Timothy 6.17-18)
God's people are to be ready to give, not only to the poor saints, but also to the work of the Lord as opportunity presents itself. In other words, God's people are to be ready to give financially on short notice.
Note: Although our text verses were written to the rich saints I suspect today's saints are all rich in comparison to the saints of the early church.
5. To present our body a living or dying sacrifice! (Ro. 12.1/ II Tim. 4.6)
Our bodies have been purchased by the Lord and do not belong to us. They are the Lord's property, and should be yielded to His will.
6. To every good work. (Titus 3.1)
God's people are spiritually created with a zeal to do good works. Therefore it should be natural for us to be looking for and ready to perform good works. If this is lacking in your life something is spiritually wrong! Check up. Some spiritual adjustment needs to be made! In fact, you might be deceived and in need of salvation.
7. To give an answer to every man. (I Peter 3.15)
God's people are to be prepared to respond when questioned about their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Knowing some questions are traps to ensnare and some are of sincerity, the fact is as children of God we are to be ready to give a godly answer to those who ask.
Again, if you are a child of God, He expects you to be ready and prepared for certain events or spiritual opportunities that are sure to come your way.
Can you say "I'm ready"?
If you are not ready, get ready.
