Alexander Duff and the Token for Good

“They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end. Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.” (Psalm 107:27-28).

A very moving story is related of the near disaster when Alexander Duff went out as a Missionary to India. The ship on which he sailed ran aground on a rock and it was only with the greatest difficulty that the passengers were saved. They congregated together on the desolate island under what shelter they could provide. They lost everything except the clothes that they wore. One of the sailors however noticed a package cast on the shore. When he lifted it he found it was two books that had been carefully wrapped together in leather. One was a Bible and the other was a Scottish Psalm book. The items were somewhat wet and battered but he recognised Duff’s name written clearly on both. Mr. Duff had received them as gifts prior to his departure and had not yet used them. Taking the Bible and the Psalter to the makeshift shelter, the sailor with joy presented them to their owner. All present sensed a sign in the action and were deeply moved as if it was a message from God. They all fell on their knees as the missionary spread out both books on the beach. He turned to Psalm 107 and read it. He then offered thanks and prayers to Him Who had heard their cry in their trouble on the rough seas. With renewed faith he looked to the Lord that He would yet bring them to their desired haven.

“I myself think that the only befitting epitaph for my tombstone would be: 'Here lies Alexander Duff, by nature and practice a sinful, guilty creature, but saved by grace through faith in the blood and righteousness of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (Alexander Duff).
