Do You Feel Alone? - Jim Scudder, Jr.

Today's Scripture: I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. Revelation 1:9

As the last surviving member of the 12 disciples, John was sent away alone to the rocky island of Patmos as punishment for his faith. I’ve visited where John was exiled. On that island, there isa cave with a large stone inside that looks like it could have been the desk of an author, and I believe it was the writing desk where John penned Revelation.

Through John’s lonely state, the Lord accomplished a mighty work. The words He gave to John give us insight and hope for the future. Imagine the Word of God without Revelation! In that book, we find that despite all the evil in this world, we will triumph in the end. If John would have despaired, he may not have been used as a vessel of the Lord to communicate these majestic truths to us.

There are times in life when God brings us to a place of solitude. Whether it is through illness, taking a hard stand with unsaved family or co-workers, or personally battling an addiction, God works in our lives so that we can better hear His voice and accomplish His work.

Do you ever feel alone? Like John on his barren island, you will always have the spirit and love of God. Whatever your island of Patmos is, remember that in every moment of every day, God is right there with you. The circumstances He uses in your life are not always pleasant, but if you allow Him to work through them, the result will always be good.

You may not see His purpose until Heaven, but be faithful and trust. Listen to His still, small voice today. What is He calling you to do?

Devotional by Jim Scudder, Jr.
