Cautious Faith - Jim Scudder, Jr.

Today's Scripture: And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. Exodus 2:1-2

In our passage today, we see the birth of one of Israel’s great leaders - Moses. But more than Moses’ birth, we see the great faith of Jochebed, his mother. Her actions illustrate another faith lesson: Faith can see what the eyes cannot.

Jochebed believed God. She believed it was wrong to follow the Pharaoh's command to kill all the newborn males. Her eyes of faith saw that God would bring a deliverer to lead the Hebrews out of the bondage of Egypt. She and her husband jeopardized their own lives because they believed what God had promised.

I see two very important faith lessons in this passage. The first is that the home needs to be the first school of faith. Children will learn at a very early age from the example set by their parents. Mom and dad, does your life reflect a strong faith in God’s promises?

The second lesson is this: spiritual faith is cautious faith. Jochebed did not parade baby Moses around the town, flaunting her disobedience. Instead, she hid him for three months. She obeyed God but was smart about it.

Sometimes in life the trials bring with them a dark valley. It is in these times of darkness that our eyes of faith can see the promises of God, even if our physical eyes cannot. Keep trusting Him and don’t quit.

Devotional by Jim Scudder, Jr.
