The Last Paragraph

Informed Bible-believers know that the last command given by Jesus to His church is called the Great Commission. We are to go and preach and baptize and teach.

But those were not the last words of Jesus. The Bible ends with a paragraph that is stunningly ignored by those calling themselves His own people. I refer of course to Revelation 22:18-21.

I am not concerned about whether these are the words of John or Jesus. Red-letter editions are not inspired in their separating out the words of the Lord. All the words of Revelationl, through the Spirit, are the words of Jesus.

Jesus warns those who take the trouble to read every Word of God to the last drop, to be very careful about adding to or subtracting from God's utterances. John is merely the messenger throughout, and even here. The Message is from heaven. Don't touch this book! Read and obey it, but don't mess with it.

As with many Scriptures, unbelievers try to wiggle out of the awfulness of the curses of the passage - plagues and removal from everlasting life - by saying this passage only applies to Revelation, not the rest of the Bible.

So someone points such a person to Deuteronomy 4:2, "You shall not add to the word which I command you." Well, that was to the Jews and only about the words of Moses, we will be told.

The praise of the Psalmist in 19 and 119 and many others, for the Word of God, will not deter such folks either, as they will relegate all such words to this or that time or person.

But the concept is established well enough for the simplest of us to grasp. From early Genesis when Satan questioned the word of God given to Eve and convinced her to add to God's command the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, all the way to the very last paragraph of Scripture where an unparalleled and alarming warning is issued, the pronouncement is obvious: God's Word is to be left as it is.

Preachers studying this weekend for a Sunday message should keep this in mind. God's not fooling around. Your people don't need your words. They need His.
