“Let Us Go into the House of the Lord”
“I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the LORD” (Psalm 122:1).
Notice five things. [1] The Psalmist was glad that others were going to the house of the LORD. It does not merely say, “Go to the house of the LORD,” but “let us go to the house of the LORD.” A literal translation of the original is, “We will go to the house of the LORD.” These were people who were going to worship God, with or without David, and it was thrilling for him to hear that they were so determined to honor the Lord. He was happy as he considered their commitment to be in attendance for public worship. This reminds me of the words of Joshua whose attitude was, whatever else others may do, “as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15). [2] The Psalmist was thankful for the unity of purpose of the saints. “Let us go,” is what they said. None said “I will go,” but rather “let us go.” O blessed oneness of mind and heart when the saints of God as a congregation resolve that they will meet together and give thanks and praise to the Lord. Yes, the worship will come forth from the hearts of individuals, but these individuals formed a united assembly. They were of the same purpose and goal, to bless the Name of the Lord together. There were no strifes, divisions or schisms. In this they were of one heart and mind, to render glory to the Lord by attendance at His house. [3] The Psalmist was glad that others were concerned enough to encourage him to go with them to worship Jehovah. He was not offended that he was invited to attend the public gathering for worship, but rather rejoiced that these had such interest in him so as to urge him to join in honoring the Creator. It brought joy to his heart that there were people who cared enough about him to compel him to go along with them to the house of God. They wanted him to join in hearing the word of the Lord and in praising the God of grace for His marvelous benefits to unworthy sinners. [4] The Psalmist was glad that he was pressed to attend and for the blessed opportunity to join fellow sinners in praise and prayer. He was happy to go with others who, like himself, needed the mercy of God through Messiah. David desired to hear the sweet message of redeeming love, justifying grace and imputed righteousness. He felt the strong need to go and hear of justice satisfied by the substitutionary death of the Seed of the woman who in time would come and die for His people, the perfect sacrifice for sin. [5] The Psalmist was made glad by just the mentioning of going to worship the Lord. “I was glad when they said..” The anticipation of attending the place of worship brought him joy. He may have been disheartened or depressed before, but just the thought of going to worship the Lord made his heart overflow with joy and thanksgiving. Time spent in the house of the Lord was not a thing to be dreaded or avoided; public worship was not a drudgery to him. These would not be moments wasted, but a God-honoring, soul-benefitting time spent with the saints of God in worshiping the only Lord and Savior. “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the LORD.” I am glad God brought me here today to worship through the singing of hymns, the giving of our offerings, public prayer, the reading of His Word, and the declaration of the gospel of sovereign grace.
