The Gospel: an Invitation or a Command?

Acts 3:19-22

Many speak and write of Christ inviting sinners to believe on Him. Even worse, many actually practice the invitation system of encouraging sinners to walk an aisle, or say a prayer to invite the LORD Jesus into their lives. Why is that wrong? First, because there is no such practice found in all of Scripture. Second, it has man acting, making the decision, and Christ passive and waiting. Third, the words of Scripture pertaining to man are not just invitations to act, but commands to bow to the LORD Jesus.

REPENT

19 Repent ye therefore, It is here stated, as elsewhere throughout the inspired word as an imperative, and therefore a command. Although it is outside the power of any sinner to repent [change of mind, heart, or attitude] toward God, yet God can do no less than command repentance of all human kind, Acts 17:30. Yet, the evidence that one is the object of God’s Grace is when they do repent, because repentance is the gift of God’s Spirit of Grace, and the fruit of Christ’s finished work accomplished at Calvary, 2 Timothy 2:25. Repentance and faith are synonymous according to Acts 20:21-‘repentance toward God, and [even] faith toward our LORD Jesus Christ.’ What God commands, He grants to those He has chosen in His eternal grace, and the LORD Jesus Redeemed by His precious shed blood.

TURN AGAIN

19and be converted, [a compound word meaning to turn around against or in the opposite direction]. Here again the command is given to turn away from the path of sin and condemnation, to the LORD Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 1:9 teaches that it is again the evidence of being elect of God, redeemed by the LORD Jesus, and called by the Spirit of Grace. Being an imperative in that where there is no turning to Christ, there has been no salvation granted by Him.

HEAR HIM

22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A Prophet shall the LORD your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; Him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever He shall say unto you. To hear is an imperative, but also an endowment of God’s Spirit. None can or do hear but those to whom He gives the hearing. But any who do hear and heed the command to hear do bow to Him in submission and obedience to Him and His death as ALL of their Righteousness before God. Christ said, ‘My sheep HEAR My voice,’ John 10:27. Sinners come to Christ, at His command, because they are His, and therefore they MUST (imperative) come.

Amen! Man is dead spiritually and therefore unable to do anything on
his own. Yes, that means that he cannot make a "decision" for the
Lord of his own choice. The Lord Jesus told the man with the
withered hand to "stretch out your hand". The man under his own
power could not do so, but through the power of Jesus, he could and
he did. So it is with salvation...Salvation is of the Lord!
