Finally, I got around to uploading 17 more photos from my trip to Myanmar (Burma) last February. I was clearing old photos from my camera for my upcoming trip to Brazil and found that I had not yet transferred a lot of the pictures from the previous trip.
In the pictures I uploaded this morning, you will be able to see the old Burmese palace from the days when it was the kingdom of Ava. It is strictly a museum these days, but it is a massive compound. Most of the pictures are of the moat, the wall, and some of the guard towers. The restaurant across the street from the palace allowed me onto their roof to take the shots.
The next series of shots shows the beginnings of the trip north from Mandalay to Kalemyo. Most of the trip was through the middle of the night. We arrived in Kalemyo about 7:00 AM after leaving Mandalay around 4:00 PM. We made the trip at night because of the hot sun during the day. I documented the first 3 hours or so until we got to Sagaing. From there we continued northward to Monywa, where the pavement ends. From Monywa northward the roads are all dirt. In places it would even be better to call them "paths" than "roads." Most of the bridges were out, so we had to ford the streams and rivers in the jeep. One of the pictures is of the local bus service that makes the run to Monywa. I hired a jeep all the way from Mandalay to Kalemyo so I could have the jeep at my disposal while in Tahan and Kalemyo as well as being certain of a ride all the way back to Mandalay.
Hopefully, I will be able to post some more pictures on Monday of the orphanage itself and the construction that took place on the new hostel there.
