“Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession” (Hebrews 3:1)
The day prior to the Lord’s Supper is a time for looking unto Jesus. Having spent time in confession on Thursday and examining our spiritual fruits on Friday, on Saturday we turn our eyes to “consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession.” By these words, the author of Hebrews warmly exhorts the brethren to make Jesus the object of close and serious consideration. Jesus is our chief “apostle,” for the Father sent Christ to reveal the Faith we hold dear. Jesus is our “high priest,” in that he gave his life for sin and continues to pray for us. He is the Christ, the anointed of God. Our bronze serpent, this Jesus heals the sin-bitten souls of all who look to him. Consider who he is, what he has done, the work he continues to do, and the work he will bring to completion at the last day. This close consideration draws us closer to him, inflames our love for him, and stirs our obedience to him. Consider Jesus. Then come to the Table.
