"A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing." Proverbs 9:13

As we consider the last six verses of Proverbs 9, it is important to remember that while this is the description of a fool, it is not meant just for women. This is a continuation of the illustration that began in verses 1-3. This chapter compares and contrasts wisdom and foolishness, personifying them in the person of a woman. Let us consider the three characteristics of a fool given in this verse.

  1. Clamorous - This word means to be in a rage, uproar, or to express anger through being noisy and loud. How do you handle conflict or not getting your way? Do you lose control and blow up? Do you just “tell it like it is” as you tear down another person in order to vent or get some things off of your chest? This is not just speaking of the volume in which you speak, but the heart that lies behind your words. Sad to say that many Christians and church members communicate in such a clamorous way on Facebook and other social media outlets, that it is an embarrassment to the church as well as the cause of Christ. If you are prone to this type of behavior, I want to encourage you to repent. This is not an expression of wisdom, as a matter of fact, it is the first attribute mentioned here that separates a foolish person from one who is wise.
  2. Simple - This word simply means silly or stupid. Your silliness and stupidity is measured by your ability to apply biblical wisdom in your day to day life. This has nothing to do with being ignorant of something. It is in reference to not using what you have. Do you have a head full of bible knowledge and yet lack the ability to resolve a conflict without being clamorous? If so, you are simple, you have not taken the time to learn how to use what you have. Being silly or stupid is a choice, not a passive state of existence. We usually express how silly we are in an attempt to get our way.
  3. Knoweth nothing - This seems to carry with it the idea of being unaware or ignorant. We could say that this person has not applied themselves to gaining wisdom. Most people that fall into this category believe that no one else’s position on a particular subject could be more accurate than theirs. It is an expression of self-sufficiency.
