What an awesome tragedy has taken place in the country of Haiti, leaving the city of Port au Prince flattened into rubble, with an estimated 10,000 lives lost. The reports and pictures are heart-wrenching. One report speaking of a school with 700 children in it totally collapsed and no sounds of cries coming from under the rubble. Thousands of lives caught in the collapsed buildings are ebbing away as their fellow citizens stand by helpless waiting for aid to come in. And this, in a country with hundreds of years of poverty, dysfunctional government and corruption. What a picture of human misery! What an urgent time to call upon the Holy God of heaven and earth for His mercy! Surely, this is not a time to ask, "Why, God?!" But it is a time to ask, "Lord, What now? What am I called to do now?" What an important opportunity for the Christian community world-wide to manifest compassion in Christ's name. Now is the time (yes even in the midst of recession) to manifest the willingness to give sacrificially. In comparison to what they have we an abundance and can give at least something (even if it means postponing our economic recovery, or even our own projects). We are called to be the hands of the Body of Christ. Love is never a wrong response. Compassion does not need a translator. Have we heard the message of Jesus in the Good Samaritan parable? Do we agree that the true neighbour was the Samaritan, "he that showed mercy" upon the beaten, dying man on the road? If we agree then we will obey Jesus words and through whatever means we have or agencies we can support will be determined to "Go, and do likewise." (Luke 10:37)
