Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality;
Two possible stores of future "treasure"; one a store of good things, the other a store of bad things. They are the fruit of the life we spend, the crop which is produced by the seed we plant in our lives. There is a tension here between what we do and the mercy of God… for NO ONE ever DESERVES to be saved. There is nothing in us that cries for God, nothing that seeks mercy, and nothing that would ever be able to do anything in any manner that God would see as good. The mercy of God is exactly that, mercy. It is favor undeserved and a turning away of the just punishment which we DO deserve. This fact alone should drive us to our knees in worship of the God who offers such mercy, but all too often we simply look at His kindness as if it were our due. We seem to honestly think that we are so special that God COULD never and SHOULD never treat us with justice for our sin, that He would be unreasonable and mean to expect us to repent of sin, and should just accept us as we think we should be! This attitude comes out in every aspect of our relativistic culture. We allow people to define their own idea of truth, and more, demand that everyone else bow to what people think they want. How a person "identifies" is more important to us that who or what they actually ARE, and like the emperor who had no clothes, they parade around expecting the world to bow to their imagined reality… it does not follow that God will act accordingly. His mercy is always KINDNESS. It is always UNDESERVED and it is always WONDERFUL… but know this; His wrath is as terrible as His mercy is good. We do no one any favors when we pretend otherwise, and we certainly do nothing but harm when we refuse to warn them of their approaching doom. Beloved, all of us must repent of our sin and cast ourselves upon the mercy of God, there IS no other hope. But the hope of His mercy is absolute, and when you find mercy in Christ Jesus, you find forgiveness, life and a future without end!!!
