Mundane But Precious Facts of The Bible

Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks (John 6.23)

John is relating a somewhat mundane fact about where some boats landed. What seems strange is this: if all that John wanted to do was identify the location where the boats landed, why did he add the detail about the Lord giving thanks for the food? He could have ended the sentence with the word “bread” and that would have been enough to identify the location. But the Holy Spirit would not have it so; therefore, He inspired John to add the detail, “after the Lord had given thanks.” As to John’s motive in adding these words, I can only imagine that he was profoundly affected by the sight of the Lord Jesus giving thanks.

In fact, you will notice that John does not identify the site as the place where the Lord turned five loaves and two fish into a feast for 5000+. Rather he identifies it as the place where the people ate bread after the Lord had given thanks. The giving of thanks to God takes preeminence over the miracle! Man is impressed with miracles: God takes note of thankfulness. Sometimes we may think that the Lord looks for great things from us and is especially pleased by our “gigantic” efforts for His kingdom. But, this Scripture teaches us what is important: a thankful heart over God’s gracious works!

Very good point Bro. Terrell. How often do we forget or neglect to give thanks to the Lord for all that He has done for us?
