God’s Covenant of Peace “For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed, but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD, who hath mercy on thee.”
(Isaiah 54:10)
When the LORD turns the world upside down and metaphorically, the mountains depart and the hills are removed, our nature is to question Him. As the foundation of our lives appears to be shaken, it is then that we need the LORD to turn our eyes beyond the circumstances to Him Who rules and overrules in all things. The Covenant of His Peace that the Father has established from eternity in the LORD Jesus can never be shaken or moved. How precious then are the gracious promises of our LORD and how comforting to those who are chosen and redeemed in Christ, “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The LORD knoweth them that are his.” (2 Timothy 2:19)
It is expected that the unbelieving world should question God and His purpose of Grace for some and not to others. They say that it is not fair that He should purpose Grace for those He has chosen in His Covenant of Grace and pass by others. That is the nature of an unbelieving heart. And yet, we who are God’s children by that same distinctive Grace, how dishonorable it is to God’s Glory for us to question His will and way. Such is the depravity of our own hearts, even under the reign of Grace ruling over them by His Spirit, that we should doubt Him, or question Him in unbelief. Such is the most venomous poison of our hearts, that were it not for God’s Covenant of Peace established and fulfilled in the LORD Jesus, we should be cast off and condemned with the reprobates.
Far be it for us who are God’s children, whose salvation is sure in Christ our Surety, that we should in any way be found identifying with His enemies. As believers by His Covenant Love and Faithfulness, how could we ever dare to think that one day, we could be sure and secure in His Eternal Covenant Love and the next day to fear being cast off forever under God’s wrath. That really is what our own heart of Faithlessness would have us believe in those times of trouble that God brings into our lives to shake the mountains and hills of our hope. Such times are not purposed to bring us to doubt Him but rather strengthen the very Faith that He has given us to trust Him and rest in His Gracious Covenant of Peace, established in His Son’s finished work whereby His children have been fully, freely and finally justified them before Him.
In addition, God forbid that we should ever think that when all is peaceful and quiet in our lives, that it is in any way due to any inherent goodness in us, as the cause of WHY the LORD should deal so bountifully with us. Or, that when He does shake our world that somehow we have done something for which He is now angry with us to the point of casting us off. This depraved flesh is our greatest enemy to divert our eyes from Him alone Who is the Sole Object of True God given Faith. Thankfully, God never gives us over to this flesh to where unbelief prevails and we completely lose sight of God’s Free Grace, Eternal Love and Unchangeable Faithfulness to us in the salvation that the LORD Jesus has worked out to the Father’s satisfaction.
May the LORD grant us that steadfast Faith to believe and rest in Christ Jesus, God’s Son with Whom God the Father has established His Covenant of Peace. We can rest assured that not one single drop of Mercy will fall in vain, nor one Word of His Promised Grace should fail one of His own. Sooner could it be thought possible that the hills and mountains be removed, or even Heaven and earth pass away, than for the LORD's Love and Kindness ever depart from one of His children. God has declared it and His Word shall not and cannot fail. To doubt is to dishonor the God. "He sent redemption unto his people; he hath commanded his covenant FOREVER…” (Psalm 111:9)
Someone has written, “Owhat a stedfast Hope have I, built on Thy Faithful Word! Tho' all things fail beneath the sky, Thy Truth stands fast, my LORD. Then why should Faith or Courage fail? Or Comforts me forsake? Let Faith but look within the Veil, all's safe for Jesus sake.”
