The Efficacy of Christ’s Blood

“...the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin.”

(1 John 1:7)

Did the sacrificial death of the LORD Jesus merely make cleansing possible or did His death actually cleanse from sin those for whom He paid the debt? The Word of God is clear that it cleanses from all sin. That means sins past, present and yet to be committed. The blood of the LORD Jesus has already purged away the sins of those for whom Christ died.

1.) To ‘cleanse’ means to ‘make clean’ or ‘purge’ completely from sin. The death of the LORD Jesus has so completely removed the sin of those the Father gave Him to save, that there remains not even a trace of the sin that He bore. How glorious the Savior and the work that He accomplished that there remained nothing but righteousness to impute to their account. Therefore, it is said by the Spirit of God through the apostle Paul in Romans 5:9,Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.” To be cleansed from all sin means to be justified by His blood shed, so completely that there is, “...therefore now, NO CONDEMNATION...” (Romans 8:1) This is the completed work of the LORD Jesus, “...when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high...” (Hebrews 1:3) What glorious GOOD NEWS this is to the sinner for whom Christ paid the debt, when the Spirit reveals Him in the heart!

2.) To ‘cleanse’ is put in the present tense. The perfect work of the LORD Jesus and His continued presence to intercede from Heaven, ensures that His work accomplished can never be undone. It cleanses once, for all, forever. O! How this is GOOD NEWS for any that the Spirit of God has shown their sinful estate and continues to convince them that, in them, there dwells no good thing, Romans 7:18, yet, they have been made FREE from sin and its curse forever. Their sins are removed from them before God, “As far as the east is from the west...” (Psalm 103:12) Our LORD cried from the cross, “...IT IS FINISHED...” (John 19:30) and since finished, obliterated sin forever. Our justification is not in believing but rather believing, by the Spirit of Grace, that the justification was already accomplished when He shed His blood.

The first part of 1 John 1:7 tells us that all who are justified by the blood of the LORD Jesus, do walk in the LIGHT (Christ): Who He is and what He has accomplished. Here is our fellowship and oneness as sinners saved by His Grace, through His blood shed.
