Ezekiel 37:1–3 (NKJV): 37 The hand of the Lord came upon me and brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley; and it was full of bones. 2 Then He caused me to pass by them all around, and behold, there were very many in the open valley; and indeed they were very dry. 3 And He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” So I answered, “O Lord God, You know.”
This is the only true answer to the question of man's salvation... "O Lord God, You know..." We cannot know who God will call, who He will turn to Himself, who He will make alive, though they are dead in trespass and sin. We cannot know how the Spirit moves in and over the hearts of men, how God makes us to see our sin and causes us to repent. We cannot know the details of any one man, or any group of men... but we CAN know that God knows! We can know the fact that there is NOTHING in any of us that makes us more or less likely to believe, that makes us more or less fit for God's call, that makes us more or less able to respond in faith. There is in all of us, only what was in that valley... dry, dusty, dead bones... and they were VERY dry. There is nothing about any man that is more Godward... there is no predisposition to spiritual truth, there is no innate hunger for Him, no desire, no longing for truth. There is only death, ruin and decay. We are spiritually dead. But the promise of life that changes those who believe in Jesus, comes to dead men. Jesus said that He came that we might have life, and life abundant. The potential for salvation lies not in the breasts of men, but in the power, love, mercy and grace of God. It is this that makes Ezekiel's answer so perfect - "You know"... My precious child, we know that God CAN because He promises that He WILL... this promise should be the driving obsession of our lives. We should hunger to see the dead live, to see rebels become sons. And when we see that indeed He has made dry, dead bones live, the only response that makes sense is praise. For God has done what was impossible, He has made dry bones live, He has made us alive in Christ, He has made us His own!!
