Psalm 119:66–68 (NKJV): Teach me good judgment and knowledge, For I believe Your commandments. Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word. You are good, and do good; Teach me Your statutes.
The perspective here is so simple, yet so absolutely foreign to our natural way of thinking it often passes by us completely. In a nutshell, EVERYTHING God does, says and commands is always, without exception, good. Period. No arguments, no degrees of good, no alternate opinions needed or welcome. God is not only completely good in all this, but He is also entirely RIGHT. Since we do not by nature believe this, God often afflicts us to teach us. Pain is a VERY good teacher, and God loves us enough to be willing to chasten every single one of us that He calls child. He will not leave us in a condition where we do not agree with Him, nor obey Him. If you belong to God, He will correct your behavior and your thinking... and the psalmist gives testimony to the effectiveness of this method... "before I was afflicted I went astray - but NOW I keep your statues." But it is the next thought that stops me in my tracks. "Please teach me your ways"... even knowing the methods that will likely be required to penetrate my rebellious heart, knowing the pain of past lessons, knowing the sorrow I have created for myself... please teach me... this, beloved of God, is the cry of a living soul. The evidence of the born-again is summed in this unflinching desire for God to conform us to Christ. Cry out to God and find that His mercy sweetly provides all you need!!!
