Ephesians 5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
Sleeping is natural to us. The danger is sleeping when we should be awake. We thus have to be active to stay awake. We have to move and make progress in our Christian walk. We are to walk as children of light. It is hard to fall asleep when we are walking. It is when we stop moving that we tend to fall asleep. Another interesting fact of sleeping is that we do not know when we fall asleep. We only know we’ve been asleep after we wake up. We also do not know intuitively how long we have been asleep. We are so helpless when we are asleep as we are both defenseless and mindless in our sleep. We need to have someone wake us up. How would you want someone to wake you up? Would you want someone to throw a bucket of ice water on you? Would you want someone to yell and scream at you? No, you would want someone to wake you up gently and with consideration.
Remember also it takes time to wake up. When we first wake up we may be in a bad mood and not thinking properly. You cannot treat someone who just woke up like someone who has been awake for several hours. We should be gracious to those who are newly awakened. However, we do expect people to eventually become fully awake and start moving.
Thus any one of us may have some area of our lives where we have fallen asleep. We may not even know we have these blind spots. Thus hopefully we have someone in our lives who love us enough to wake us out of our sleep. How sad and unloving would it be if we were to let people sleep away in times of danger. How sad is it if we never woke people up because we are afraid of disturbing them. We should be willing to bring temporary disturbance to someone for their greater good.
