“NOT OF FAITH” [Rom 14:19-23]

"But the one doubting has been condemned if he eats, because it is not of faith; and anything that is not of faith is sin." vs23

Everything that is not from faith is sin. We have liberty to do things, but if we can’t do them with a clean conscience we sin against God. Let us consider others and walk by faith.

First, do not sin in what you allow [vs19-21]. “So then, we should pursue the things of peace, and the things for edification among each other. Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are clean, but it is wrong to the man eating through a stumbling block. It is good neither to eat meat, nor to drink wine, nor anything in which your brother stumbles.” Keep your brother important. It is MORE VITAL to care for him than enjoy yourself. There are things you can do but must give up, because love - not enjoyment - leads you to higher freedom.

I labor in Nigeria as a missionary. I have a right to be paid by those I teach the gospel. Yet, I've given up this right, so that I can minister more effectively, and brothers from the West have picked up the tab. Mary Slessor and Amy Charmichael had every right to marry and settle into a beautiful homes, but they gave it up to serve as missionaries instead. This is noble and generous. It is a greater use of our freedom, following the example of Barnabas and Paul [1 Cor 9].

The story is told of Harriet Tubman. A very brave free woman who went back to slave territory repeatedly. She put her life on the line to free others. This is higher freedom. Likewise, it is more loving, more bold, and thus more joy producing to put our neighbors before ourselves. We’ll refrain from things lest they get the wrong idea, even though we’re free to do it.

Secondly, we must have a clean conscience in what we enjoy [vs22]. “The faith that you have, keep to yourself before God. Blessed is the one not judging himself in what he approves.” Just because my brother can drink wine, doesn’t mean I can. Just because he can watch movies, doesn’t mean I can. Just because he can miss the mid-week service, doesn't mean I can. If we do things against our conscience, then we separate ourselves from God, and GREATER sin will follow.

Haven't you seen it in your life? You sin in a small matter, hardly noticeable - something someone else can do without shame, but it’s WRONG FOR YOU - so you get further away, and bigger sin takes root. I’ve had issues that seem nothing to others - something God might command someone else to do, like working a side job - only to know in my conscience that I must devote to ministry. Trying to pursue these lusts broke fellowship, guilt entered, and my resolve weakened. Coldness entered, conviction in the pulpit and prayer, joy was lost, and I had to put it away; it was an internal struggle because I could not do it in faith.

Thirdly, if you can do it by faith, then enjoy [vs23]! "Blessed is the one not judging himself in what he approves." God is no ogre. Marriage is good. There’s nothing wrong with wealth, so if you can get a promotion, get a wife, or get away for the weekend, then have a blast! Do not feel guilty because you’re happy, but GIVE GOD THANKS: walk with Him in it.

Christianity is not misery. God has specific rules but liberty in many things. Use your liberty to drink wine, read the newspaper, or play with your friends on social media. Use the freedom Christ gave you with joy, so you can draw others. If you want to go to a feast, then go! Paul says, “Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, for, ‘The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.’ If an unbeliever invites you and you want to go, eat anything set before you without raising questions of conscience [1 Cor 11:25-27].” Don’t feel guilty because others are not saved, but live Christ crucified before them.

Finally, the grace of the gospel makes us free servants. We are free in Christ and loving to each other. We live by faith, and whatever isn’t of faith, we leave.
