Concerning the subject of assurance: Many people struggle and worry, wondering whether or not they belong to Christ. Many people are looking for assurance. I believe that is a good and wise thing to do! I need assurance too! But for those who struggle with it and cannot find rest for wondering whether or not Christ will have them, may this be a settling truth to the heart...
Christ has plainly declared who He will have. He has plainly declared who He came to save, who belongs to Him, and who will be kept by Him for all of eternity. He said He came to save sinners. He said He “came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Matt. 9:13). So our assurance should not be based on whether or not we see “good” in ourselves, but whether or not we see sin in ourselves. If when we look within we see no sin, then we should have very little assurance that Christ came to save us. A person who does not see himself to be a sinner should have no assurance at all! But if when we look within, all that we see is sin! If sin is mixed with all that we do! If “in our flesh dwells no good thing”, then we can have all of the assurance of the word of Christ Himself! He is the God who cannot lie! And if He said that He came to save sinners, and that’s what We are - sinners who’s only hope is to be washed in the blood of Christ - then that means He came to save us! The more we see of our sin, the more assurance that ought to give us! (Hebrews 10:19-23)
“Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
