“THE NEW WAY OF THE SPIRIT” [Rom 7:1-6]

“But now we have been released from the law, since we have died to what held us, so that we may serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old letter of the law.” [vs6]

Our new way of serving God is in the Spirit, our Helper. Paul continues the subject in Romans 8, fully developing it. Now, however, he introduces our freedom from the law along with the Spirit’s power.

The law works wrath. It condemns. It brings no fruit to God. It only convicts us of what we HAVEN’T done. “For the law produces wrath, and where there is no law, there is no transgression [Rom 4:15].” We died to the law, however, in the body of Jesus Christ, so that we may live by Another Power, the Spirit enabling us. We need this power that comes from Somewhere Else, and we need this hope. We must not think it is will power. We must know that we have a Helper.

In Romans 6, it’s called being under grace. Here, grace gives us the Spirit - the 3rd Person of the Trinity to dwell in our midst. Do you want to be miserable? Just tell people, “You can do it.” However, when God made promise to Abraham, He included the Spirit, and we must include Him also. “He redeemed us in order that the blessing promised to Abraham would come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit [Gal 3:14].”

It is not the power of money, but the power to live a new life. The Spirit came to us at Pentecost, enabling the church to do what we can’t. Our Lord said, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth [Acts 1:8].” The Spirit makes us serve God and brings consolation. The Spirit is the death blow to sin’s dominion. We ARE new creations, but the Spirit is the One who helps us fight.

Many are miserable for this reason: They have not learned the way of the Spirit. They are looking to themselves, saying, “I ought to do this,” but when we look to the Spirit, we say, “You are able,” and thus faith and confidence is in God.

Where is your hope for new life? How will you overcome the flesh and the Devil? Will you surrender to the Spirit, and say, “I can do all through Him who strengthens me?”

→ Do not fear. The Spirit is able, faithful, and kind. He comes to us in our desperate need BECAUSE we have life from the dead. “Likewise, my brothers, you also have been put to death to the Law through the body of Christ, for you to belong to another, to the One having been raised out from the dead, so that we should bear fruit to God [vs4].” Union with Christ brings the Spirit down, because we’re raised to a new life.
