“SAVED BY GRACE” [Eph 2:1-10]
WEDNESDAY, MAY 01, 2019

“We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and were by nature children under wrath as the others were also… You are saved by grace.” vs3, 5

We were just like everyone else. He says, “Under wrath as the others were also.” There is not one thing different about us or one thing that we did to make us to differ; it is all by God’s grace and mercy that we are saved. He elected us, or we’d perish [Eph 1:4]. He predestined us, or we’d be in hell [Eph 1:5]. He adopted us, or we’d be bastards. He redeemed us, or we’d pay our own sins forever [Eph 1:6]. He came to us with sovereign grace and mercy, or we’d be ignorant and blind [Eph 1:9].

It is not one thing that we contributed or one thing different about us: He didn’t save us because we were stronger, wiser, or more willing: He gave us everything we have.

Secondly, grace saved us, and grace gets the glory. He says, “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love that He had for us, made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace [Eph 2:4-5].” It is not the will-power of man, the free will of man, or any such nonsense! The human will is bound - totally depraved and corrupt - but God’s grace is merciful and powerful [Eph 2:1-3]. He has the power to make us willing and to save us BEFORE we’re ever born. He didn’t wait until we made a decision: He resurrected us in Jesus Christ - just like He put us in His death, we were in His resurrection also. We just found out about it, because we are one with Christ. 2000 years ago I was there, and in time I received my inheritance - the downpayment of the Spirit - but I was guaranteed the salvation already [Eph 1:14]. He didn’t wait on me to get willing; He saved me according to His own purpose and grace, according to the good pleasure of His own will. He is God whom no man can stop.

The mind that says God can be stopped doesn’t know the Sovereign God of the Bible, who works all things after the counsel of His own will always [Eph 1:11]. He has a permissive will, where He allows men to disobey, but He has a sovereign will, where He uses our disobedience.

Thirdly, this is STAGGERING GRACE, and the gospel ought to be too much for you to handle: it ought to be too much in weight and glory, too gracious, and only befitting God -that He’d show how great He is in kindness towards sinners by lavishing upon us everlastingly because of Christ. He says, “So that in the coming ages, He might display the immeasurable riches of His grace through His kindness to us in Christ Jesus [Eph 2:7].”

Not only is the goodness ours, but it is because of Someone Else, His Perfect Son, whom He gave to suffer. We are being rewarded for SOMEONE ELSE’S obedience, and this is grace: God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. This is a great definition. God wants to show how good He is by how He treats us, and we’ve been chosen to the inheritance!

Fourthly, it cannot be said more plainly and boldly, “not from works”, not from what we say, do, or contribute: Not one iota of us, “lest any man should boast.” He says, “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift--not from works, so that no one can boast [vs8-9].” Your gospel - to be God’s gospel - must leave man without one thing to boast about. If God’s done His part, and you’ve done your part, then you’ve got room to boast, and you are your own savior, because YOU DID what God did not do, because you say He does the same for everyone, so we make ourselves to differ. This is contrary to the gospel in every way, and it is not the gospel, no matter how many people hold to it and oppose us. We are the ones with truth, for the Scriptures and the ancients are on our side.

Finally, even our good works are ordained by God and given to us! He says, “For we are His creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them [vs10].” He didn’t wait on us to perform them, and then save us: He saved us so that we could do the good works that faith produces; it is all of God. The good we do is God’s gift; it is not our merit; it is not why we are saved; it is not what we contribute!
