“GREAT FEAR” [Acts 5:1-11]

“Then Peter said to her, ‘Why did you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out!’ Instantly she dropped dead at his feet. When the young men came in, they found her dead, carried her out, and buried her beside her husband. Then great fear came on the whole church and on all who heard these things.” vs9-11

We need the fear of God, or we will perish and burn in hell. Hypocrisy is the deceitfulness of the heart, that says, “I can lie to God.” It fools people, some of the time, but it cannot fool the Most High. If we’d humble ourselves, and confess that we’re sinners, then He’d have mercy on us. If we play the hypocrite, then He’ll punish us forever.

Ananias and Sapphira wanted the acclaim of Christianity without making the sacrifice. They wanted to appear more righteous than they were. If they came to God and said, “We see them giving. We see Barnabas laying it at the Apostle’s feet, and we want to be like them”, then God would have made them like-minded. They’d have the same love in their heart, because He’s willing to give grace. However, they pretended, rather than humbling themselves: They sought to exalt themselves [Luke 14:11]!

Many come to the assembly of the saints because they want the benefits, but they don’t want Christ: they want to be praised, want to enjoy the love, and they want the name of Christ without the battle and the warfare. They want to be saved in the eyes of men, but the eyes of God mean nothing to them! How could they do this, when God sees all? How could they lie to the Holy Spirit?

Thus, man’s total depravity is proved. CS Lewis foolishly said that he didn’t believe in the doctrine because men would never know themselves totally depraved if they were. Yet, he proved the very doctrine by denying it! With all of the Bible knowledge he had, he was ignorant of the gospel, because he put human wisdom above the written revelation. He said:

I disbelieve that doctrine, partly on the logical ground that if our depravity were total we should not know ourselves to be depraved, and partly because experience shows us much goodness in human nature.” [Compare with Romans 3:10-18; Eph 2:1-3]

Men go about doing evil in the name of Christ. This is a hard and a painful lesson, but men claim the doctrine of Christ, and yet they are slanderers, deceivers, and hypocrites [1 Cor 5:11]. It reminds me of the little boy who said he bathed, and yet everyone could smell the filth. Some cover it up with cologne, and they are whitewashed tombs, filled with doctrine but no new life. Others are the nicest people you’ve ever met, but truth means nothing! They DO NOT CARE what the Bible says: They are christians without need of repentance.

Oh, how tragic this is, but it is life: Some must perish, so that others can be saved. Wrath must come upon Noah’s day, and Sodom must be destroyed, so that sinners like us can flee from the wrath to come. Nadab and Abihu must be burned, and the earth must swallow up Dathan, so that we can refuse to play with Scripture and take it seriously. Ananias and Sapphira were a warning to those who were spared [Acts 5:11].

“Come to the Lord Jesus Christ in truth:” This is what their death proclaims to everyone. Do not play games. Be sincere.

You will be saved if you come to Him. You will also be damned, if you do not need the Son of God above all else. Peter asked Sapphira, “Tell me, did you sell the field for this price [vs8]?” He could have told her, “Hey, we just buried your husband for lying. Why don’t you come clean?” He could have done everything possible to talk her out of lying, but he simply let her do it, and pronounced her death! Why? Because God will give Orpah every chance to go back, and she will, which distinguishes her from Ruth, whom He gives SPECIAL GRACE to go forward [Ruth 1:15-17]. “But Ruth replied: ‘Do not urge me to leave you or to turn from following you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD punish me, and ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.”

→ How is it with you? Can you lie to God and sleep at night? Can you get away with deceiving men? Or are you someone who must be sincere and confess your sins?
