“FINISH THE TASK” [2 Cor 8:1-11]

“Now I am giving an opinion on this because it is profitable for you , who a year ago began not only to do something but also to desire it. But now finish the task as well, that just as there was eagerness to desire it, so there may also be a completion from what you have.” vs10-11

It’s time to perform the doing of it. Many of you have expressed desires to give and support gospel ministries: Now it is time. We have a call from God - not only to desire good things but to do them, not only to want to give and get started in our plans, but to actually bring the fruit forward. This is the Christian life: Desire is not good enough; Paul would have us prove the sincerity of our love [vs8].

First, you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [vs9]! He says, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: Though He was rich, for your sake He became poor, so that by His poverty you might become rich.” This is the motive for giving; it is not the tithe! We are free from the law, bondage is gone, and someone brought you this message of the glorious gospel. Your giving is not to earn favor with God. Christ laid down His life, what more could we do to add to such a sufficient and glorious work? It is blasphemy to present God as being bribed by the foolish works of man. He is satisfied! He emptied Himself of the divine peace of heaven and took upon Him weakness, hunger, and even death! He gave it all up for you and me. Now respond. This is what God’s called us to do: Look at His love and make a decision, “Lord, here’s what I can do.”

Secondly, we are not to give what we don’t have, so don’t worry if you don’t have much. He says, “So there may also be a completion from what you have.” God knows. He gave manna to the Israelites: Some gathered a little while others gathered a lot, and He knows what you have and how much you can give. It’s not the count and the amount; it is the generosity of the heart [2 Cor 9:7].

The church at Macedonia, whom Paul commends for giving, was a POOR CHURCH: they couldn’t give as much as others, but they gave more than Paul thought possible. Paul says, “Now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace God has given the churches of Macedonia. In the terrible ordeal they suffered, their abundant joy and deep poverty overflowed into rich generosity. For I testify that they gave according to their ability and even beyond it. Of their own accord, they pleaded earnestly for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints [vs1-4].” They begged him! They wanted to be partakers in the ministry and to have fruit on their account. They were thankful to Paul and God, so they wanted to help [vs5]. They had so much joy in trials that they overflowed in giving, because God was real, salvation was real, and the power of the gospel was felt. Do likewise.

Thirdly, don’t let others rob you of this joy [vs7]. He says, “But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness, and in the love we inspired in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” Don’t let them have all the fun, but as you abound in every gift, abound in this too. Don’t leave one part lacking or undone, but grow in this grace and learn to give. Learn to trust God, to live as His steward, and to help others who’ve sown into you… others whom the Scriptures say help, like poor saints, widows and orphans. We have a responsibility and a duty to the church. We have something that we must do, but not as a matter of threatening and pressure, but as the fulfillment of love [vs8].

You say you love to see missionaries sent. Therefore, support them [3 John 1:6-8]. Your pastor needs food and shelter, and it is right to meet His needs [1 Cor 9:11].

→ Let the church of God be a giving church, so the gospel can be honored, churches planted, and believers housed and fed.
