There They Crucified Him

“Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst…” (John 19:18)

Here is a verse of Scripture that sums up the Gospel in a nutshell.

1. We see what death Christ died: the death of the cross. Why such a bloody, painful, shameful, cursed death? There is no greater way to depict the curse of sin that our LORD Jesus was to bear for His people, Galatians 3:10, 13. He was nailed to the cross, as a sacrifice bound to the altar, as a Savior purposed to this death, willingly, as God’s bond servant, his ear nailed to the Father’s door-post, to serve Him forever. He was lifted up as the brazen serpent, hung between heaven and earth because His people were unworthy of either. Such a brutal death is a reminder of just how heinous our sin is before a Holy God, “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32)

2. We see in what company Christ died: two others with Him. These were executed at that time, not by chance, but according to God’s will and purpose, and although a disgrace to our LORD Jesus, it was for two reasons. First, that the Scriptures might be fulfilled in Isaiah 53:12, He was numbered among transgressors, but not as a transgressor, being the Perfect Lamb of God. Second, there was one malefactor among the two who was one of the LORD’s sheep, for whom Christ would die and not the other, thereby giving us a picture of God’s distinguishing Grace, saving whom He will, but also saving ALL that He will. Both were malefactors, both reviled Him, both were lost, guilty sinners, but ONE was chosen of the LORD, to whom Christ declared, “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43)

3. We see what reproach Christ bore: Our LORD was to bear the reproach of sinners. “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin [no longer bearing sin] unto salvation.” (Hebrews 9:28) He bore the reproach of sinners that they not bear it, so that all the merit of their redemption, sanctification and justification accomplished at the cross be HIS. He did not die at the altar among the sacrifices, nor mingle His blood with that of bulls and goats; but He died outside the camp, among the criminals, among the worst of the worst who were sacrificed to public justice, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring such sinners as we are to God, 1 Peter 3:18.
