I must confess…I haven’t done well with mine yet. My resolution is to begin my day a little earlier this year. So far, between the holidays and football bowl games and playoffs, I haven’t had much success!!ūü§®Hopefully, once the Super Bowl is over I’ll be reaching my new year resolution!! Many resolutions are like that. I can reach my resolution it’s just that presently I prefer watching football and enjoying holiday events. Changing your daily schedule or routine, slashing some time off of social media, dropping a few pounds - these are all resolutions we can reach once we set our minds to do what we know we need to do or want to do.
There are some resolutions, however, that are beyond us. Some things require more than a little will power or determination. Quitting smoking. Setting aside alcohol overuse. Starting a steady exercise plan.
And some necessary and needful changes are far, far beyond our ability to accomplish. Admitting to an addiction and getting help. A change in attitude or heart. Keeping our tongues and tempers in check. Building up others instead of tearing them down. Worrying less and trusting more. Becoming a Christian.
For those things that are beyond us and those that are way beyond us, we need more than schedules, discipline, and coaches. We need the Lord! Praise God He is willing and able to accomplish great things in our lives as we submit to Him, rely upon Him, pray to Him, and trust in Him.
He can change hearts. He can renew minds. He can change desires. He can diminish those harmful, negative, and sinful ways and replace them with increasing joy in loving and glorifying Him. He can forgive sin. He can bring us to faith in Christ. He can make us new in Christ. He can do in us and through us what we can never do on our own! For some things in our lives, we don’t need resolutions; we need the power of God!
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.” Proverbs 3:5-8
Make those resolutions and go for it. But even more importantly, let’s surrender ourselves to the Lord, follow Him, and trust Him to do great and mighty and excellent things in our lives in 2019!!!
