First Repentance, Then Restoration.

In 2 Cor 12:21, Paul thinks that when he does visit the Corinthian believers, he may have to mourn if they have not repented of their immorality. Later in 13:7 he urges them to do what is right, that is, repent. For, as he says in v9, he is praying for their restoration.

Restoration means reconciliation and right standing with God and with one another. In other words, things being “right” between us and God and us and others. However, repentance is a necessary component of restoration. Repentance must come first, and then restoration will follow.

When we sin against God and against others, we often want the consequences of our sin, the distance created between us and others, the scars on our witness and reputation to quickly go away. We want the restoration now, and we only give lip service to the repentance, if we give anything to it at all. We want to bypass the repentance and get on with getting things back to normal. We want things right without doing the hard work of getting ourselves right. When we go down this quick-fix-it path, we eventually discover that without genuine repentance, a “band-aid” restoration ends up causing further damage. We will never be right with God and others until we do the right thing and repent.

Repentance includes a true, godly sorrow (2 For 7:10) and a turning of our whole self from sin to Christ (1 Thess 1:9-10). Repentance is difficult. It cuts at our pride and forces us into humility. It moves us to confession, ownership, responsibility, taking proper actions, and making amends. It is also difficult because it often takes time. Lifestyle and life change usually do not occur overnight. It takes time to implement new habits, and it takes even longer to demonstrate that repentance to the ones we have offended.

But when the hard work of repentance is accomplished, the joy of restoration occurs! If the Corinthian believers have indeed repented, wonderful restoration of their fellowship with God will be affirmed and their relationship with Paul will be mended upon his arrival. Repentance first, then restoration.

Let us ask the Holy Spirit to do His work of revealing and exposing our sin. When we do sin or are made aware of sin, let us ask for the Spirit’s grace and help to truly pursue repentance. Then, and only then, by the grace of God, we can rejoice that our fellowship with God and our relationship with others has been restored!
