The only way we won’t harshly judge our brethren is to see ourselves as we really are. On honest view of self will stop us from being harsh to others because an honest view of self shows me that I am the chief of sinners. The chief of sinners has no right to look down his nose at anyone.

THE ONLY ONE TO JUDGE
“For if we would judge ourselves we would not be judged.” I Cor. 11:31

If we judge others we are practicing hypocrisy (Rom. 2:1). “Therefore thou art inexcuseable, o man, whosoever thou are that judgest; for where in thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself: for you that judgest doeth the same things.” The word doest is in the present active tense. Even while you are judging you are doing the same things. And what about sitting in judgment on God? Thinking, “How could God let that happen?” or, “How is it fair for God to do that?” “Who art thou that repliest against God?” Since when does a miscreant like me or you have the moral authority to sit in judgment upon God? There is only one person who it is right to judge and condemn! Self! And we have this blessed promise, “For if we would judge ourselves we would not be judged.” Why? The one who judges self is the one who looks to Christ only as all in their salvation. Having judged themselves, they have no where else to look!

Pastor Todd Nibert

DO NOT JUDGE TOO HARD
Pray do not find fault with the man who limps
Or stumbles along the road
Unless you have worn the shoes he wears
Or struggled beneath his load.
There may be tacks in his shoes that hurt,
Though hidden away from view,
Or the burden he bears, placed on your back,
Might cause you to stumble too.

Don’t sneer at the man who is down today,
Unless you have felt the blow
That caused his fall, or felt the shame
That only the fallen know.
You may be strong, but still the blows
That were his, if dealt to you
In the self-same way at the self-same time
Might cause you to stumble too.

Don’t be too harsh with the man who sins
Or pelt him with words or stones,
Unless you are sure, yea doubly sure,
That you have no sins of your own.
For you know, perhaps if the tempter’s voice
Should whisper as soft to you
As it did to him when he went astray
‘Twould cause you to falter too.

“So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.” Romans 7:25

There are two I’s in every renewed man’s nature. There is the I which serves the law of God. And there is the I which serves the law of sin. And painful and humbling as this review is, yet is it a blessed discovery, and which can never be made but by the Spirit’s teaching.
