Your Agenda for Your Final Day
Imagine a father who surprises his children by coming home early from a long journey. He is anticipating his children's excitement. But, when he leaps from the car, they hardly even look up at him as they play with their toys. How sad! Are you longing for the return of Christ, in this way? The return of Christ is more certain even than your own death. As you age, the more you become conscious of death. Suppose the absurdity of a 90-year-old saying, "Well I've made it to 90, doesn't seem likely I'll die at all!" No, because of the time that has elapsed, his death is even more likely. In the same way, because of the time that has elapsed, the return of Christ any moment is even more certain. You will need to deliberately prepare for this by setting your hope on it. No more drifting! Distractions keep us from being ready to go. Paul is a perfect example--he was passionate for ministry because he was passionate about the return of Christ. He wasn't unlike a lady anticipating the moment her boyfriend proposes to her. It seems bizarre that we could fall asleep, but we do! Stay awake! Prosperity can make it hard; that's why God sometimes grants us pain to keep us awake. Edwards resolved to live every day as if it were his last. If this were the last, what would be your agenda for your final day?
