Bob Jones III endorses Romney for president; 'This is all about beating Hillary,' university chancellor says
Update: 10/17/07 - bju.edu: Bob Jones University has never officially endorsed political candidates and that policy has not changed. In endorsing Gov. Mitt Romney for president, Dr. Bob Jones III and Bob Taylor are speaking personally. As private citizens, we all have the privilege and responsibility to examine the options and come to a choice of conscience. It is in this role that these administrators have chosen to endorse Gov. Romney. Dr. Jones III’s and Dr. Taylor’s statements reflect their views as private citizens and not the view of Bob Jones University as an organization.

Dr. Bob Jones III, chancellor of the fundamentalist Christian university that bears his name, is looking past his religious differences with Gov. Mitt Romney and endorsing the Mormon for the Republican nomination for president, he told The Greenville News today.

"This is all about beating Hillary," Jones said. "And I just believe that this man has the credentials both personally and ideologically in terms of his view about what American government should be to best represent the rank and file of conservative Americans.

"If it turns out to be Guiliani and Hillary, we've got two pro-choice candidates, and that would be a disaster."

Asked whether Romney's religion was a stumbling block for him, Jones replied, "What is the alternative, Hillary's lack of religion or an erroneous religion?

So politics is an evil beast. Being the elected leader of an entire nation means that you will have to do things that you personally would not want to do. It's not something that I could do, personally. But it's something that *someone* must do. And better someone like Paisley than a downright heathen. Wouldn't you agree?
I'm out of space for this comment. But that last bit about BJU and Romney. We're dealing with a rock and a hard place. Life's not so simple, Pete.

Sorry I annoy you, tell me how and I'll change. you know me and worldly stuff, I know enough just to get by.
But it was worth it, did you see the double boogie, conviction and pride in one sentence, oh maybe two.
What matters more, the message, or how its presented?

OK. Now we're getting somewhere with some reasonable posts. I would agree with you regarding the "better to endorse nobody" opinion. EXCEPT that they probably feel that this is the only available option for a president that will *at least* make an attempt to stem the tidal wave of immoral legislations overtaking this country. (I mean, you HAVE noticed that's what's been happening haven't you? Just browse through the NEWS here on SermonAudio and you'll get the idea)

So, instead of them thinking "better not say anything to save our reputation" but let this country continue its slide down the proverbial toilet, they took the position that it WAS important enough for them to make this (yes) awkward and controversial position public. Because they would rather do SOMETHING than NOTHING.

Again, these are two INDIVIDUALS with their own private opinions. Yes, they hold influence, OK. But what? They aren't allowed to state their opinion then on anything without towing the party line?

This is a sad report. Better that they endorsed nobody than to endorse a Mormon candidate. Even though they were not intending it to give some credence to Mormonism, it has the appearance of doing so.

We can have more time to spend with our families! He wants to get us out of Iraq now! This war is not a Christian vs Muslim war. Jesus said his kingdom is not of this world.

What has made America a great nation? America has allowed Christian worship, preaching and the abilty to get a good job. It's not this way in alot of countries.
Go to Germany and homeschool. Go to Australia and preach that homosexuality is a sin. U go to jail. It's not just the Muslim nations.
It can happen in America too if we let government control morality. Your witnessing can and will be considered a hate crime if you let the government control morality.

Because Ron Paul won't say "homosexuality is a sin" he isn't worthy of christian votes??? His personal views on this subject are completely irrelevant to serving as president. These guys try to sell themselves as "good Christians" and its all just emotional pandering. Ron Paul isn't a phony that plays up his religion, because it is largely irrelevant to serving as president. Fundamentalists like Bob Jones apparently don't go for that. George Bush is apparently a religious christian and he really turned out great didn't he.

I can not believe a saved man that says he believes the gospel would endorse a Mormon.

We are in the world but not of it, it is better to be true to the gospel than to compromise it.

God is sovereign in all things including the leaders of nations. I will submit to the authority of Gods man, but I will not vote for anyone that believes he will be a god someday.

Ron Paul should be the obvious choice for Christian Conservatives. He embodies all the classic conservative positions and he is the only candidate who is proposing a course of action that can actually be effective in changing our nations course on abortion and homosexuality. Huckabee seems sincere and his flat tax proposal should be considered, but he does not go far enough. He's not a constitutionalist. We need to take the Constitution seriously and should demand candidates do the same. After all, it is a covenant/contract and we should know how seriously our Lord takes such matters. This is not a time for half-measures (and Romney is about a 1/10 measure at best!). If we do not get serious about restoring the Rule of Law the radical homosexual agenda and it's policies will soon be used against us (with the help of "moderate" Republicans as in CA now) and we will be sorry that we sold the Constitution and Bill of Rights down the river out of blind loyalty to the "big tent" mainstream Republicans who have betrayed nearly all for which they once stood. I for one will not vote for any candidate any more out of fear of who might be elected if my candidate doesn't win. That's exactly how we got where we are now and it smacks of fear. This is a time for sound minds, not fear.
