United Prayer Journal // DAY 389
This resolution of  Daily United Prayer  is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
"I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh." Romans 9:2-3.

I read this passage the other day and was deeply convicted. Do I have this kind of burden for lost souls? The Apostle Paul is truthfully telling the Romans without exaggeration that he has "great heaviness and continual sorrow" over the lost among his countrymen. I find it amazing that this kind of anguish follows on the heels of the glories of Romans chapter 8, "I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Most professing Christians are content to live in Romans 8 without the burden of Romans 9 for lost souls. They have their "insurance policy" for heaven and that's all that matters. This kind of mentality is foreign to Scripture. Even the most timid of us should have a burden for our own families. In fact, I believe God places us in families and in people groups generally to enable us to have natural burden for our "kinsmen according to the flesh." May we have the spirit of those four lepers that came upon the bounty of the Syrians during a time when those within the walls of the city were starving to death. What did they do? "They said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace." 2 Kings 7:9. We do not well, friends, to hold our peace.

As I say, I was pretty convicted as I meditated on these words and the great lack of compassion in my own heart for souls. Some time ago, I asked the Lord to give me one soul to speak with or give a tract to every day. By God's grace, He has not failed to give me my heart's desire in this. However, in the last week or so, I have become so weighed down with busy-ness that not only have I been unable to be a witness, but it's been very difficult for me to even make it to the prayer time. After reading Romans 9, I felt burdened to ask the Lord again to give me just one soul for that day. Well, God answered prayer. I took the opportunity to hand a tract with a smile to the lady at the drive-through window of McDonald's and asked if she knew what it was. She said, "Yes! I got one from you a few weeks ago. But please give me another so I can give it to one of my co-workers!" :) Well, sure! Praise the Lord. I couldn't have been more thrilled. But the Lord wasn't done. Later on, as I was filling my gas tank, I saw an older woman rummaging through the garbage next to my pump. "Is there something I can help you with, ma'am?" I asked. She said she was looking for some scratch-and-save cards to help pay for her gas. Long story short, I helped her fill her tank while giving her the Gospel in full. She was weeping profusely not because I was filling her tank, but because she knew her life was a wreck, and she wasn't a Christian but needed to be. I gave her a FRAGMENT TRACT and walked her through the necessity of understanding what Christ did by His death on the cross and encouraged her to put her trust in Him. "There is good news for you today, and I'm certain that God arranged for us to meet so I could tell you about it. It's much more important than a tank of gas which will be empty again in a few days." Pray for Brandy if the Lord brings her to mind. Sometimes we can overlook the "down-and-outs" in society and dismiss them. But I am reminded of Romans 10:12, "the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him." He doesn't see any difference in our social status. The same Lord is RICH UNTO ALL that call upon Him. Praise His name.

So, God not only gave me one, but two to minister to. He answers prayer.

Later that evening, I received the following text message from my neighbor who, unbeknownst to me, saw me at the gas station. I guess the Lord used that encounter with Brandy to minister to him as well. You never know who is watching or what God will do if you just seek to obey Him. Friends, I am sharing this not to focus on me, God forbid. But hopefully, it will be an encouragement to you. Ask God for one soul. Live adventurously by faith. And if you fail, like I did, get back up. None of us are perfect. "A just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again." Prov 24:16. "Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand." Psalm 37:24.
