This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
"And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much." 2 Chronicles 20:25.
Observe those last few words, "it was so much." This is why in the next verse they called the name of that valley, "Berachah," which means BLESSING. If you remember the story, Jehoshaphat was facing imminent destruction from the confederate forces of the Ammonites and Moabites. He sought the Lord along with all of Judah, their wives, and their children. The Lord gave him a promise of salvation through the words of the prophet. Jehoshaphat commanded the people to BELIEVE GOD and, essentially, to trust in His promise. As a result, he sent out, not an army, but singers to go out and offer strong praise and thanksgiving to the Lord before the enemy. Though the details are scant, the Bible records that the enemy was thoroughly defeated and Judah was saved. But not only did Judah survive, they were actually BLESSED. The spoil that was found among the dead bodies of their enemies was so much in abundance that it took three days for them to carry it all away—"it was so much."
This is the way our God operates. He not only gives us life, but He gives us life more abundantly! Our God is generous and magnanimous. We should be too. For, "he which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully." 2 Cor 9:6. This is the law of the harvest but it is also the ways of our God. Let us by faith trust in God and give as God gives to us.
"Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again." Luke 6:38.
