This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
"Now it is in mine heart to make a covenant with the LORD God of Israel, that his fierce wrath may turn away from us." 2 Chronicles 29:10.
These words were spoken by King Hezekiah. He had an idea—a thought. He had it in his mind to get serious about the things of the Lord and "make a covenant with the Lord God of Israel" in order to see a change in the land. The country was feeling the effects of God's fierce wrath and Hezekiah had enough sense to discern that the root of the problem was a spiritual one. Thank God for godly leadership that, like the children of Issachar, have "understanding of the times" and therefore knows what Israel ought to do (1 Chron 12:32). There are moments in our lives when the Lord will impress upon us something very deeply that it affects our hearts, our emotions, and our wills. These moments don't occur all the time. But when they do, we are usually broken to tears over it as our faith is enlarged and it grips every fiber of our being. Have you ever had the Lord deal with you in this manner?
May I suggest that the only way we can hear that still small voice of the Lord and be so prompted is to be still and sit in His Presence day by day. The Lord will impress upon you the burden, the idea, the thought. But you must be still. He is not in the whirlwind. He is not in the earthquake. He is not in the fire. He is in the still small voice. Look what it says about King Jotham in 2 Chron 27:6. "Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the Lord his God." This speaks of one who is coming with great intention and focus before the Lord. The same thing was said of King Jehoshaphat many years before—he prepared his heart to seek God (2 Chron 19:3). Let those words sink in. Even when we consider the prayer meeting revival that took place in New York City, we read in Jeremiah Lanphier's journal the following excerpt:
Going my rounds in the performance of my
duty one day, as I was walking along the streets,
the idea was suggested to my mind that an hour
of prayer, from twelve to one o’clock, would
be beneficial to business men, who usually in
great numbers take that hour for rest and refreshment.
How exactly was this idea suggested to his mind? Through hours and hours of prayer and meditation on the Word. Sitting in God's Presence and hearing that still small voice. Friend, are you being still enough to hear Him speaking to you?
"Be still, and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10.
