United Prayer Journal // DAY 297
This resolution of  Daily United Prayer  is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
"The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry." Psalm 34:15.

This is an invitation extraordinaire. God's eyes are upon us. His ears are open to us. This reminds me of when Hagar was all alone in a desert place—cast out, abandoned, and destitute. What do we read? "And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me." Gen 16:13. God saw her. God sees us. Even if no one else on the planet knows us or sees us, God sees us. The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous. Can we not take great comfort in this today? God sees you, my friend. He sees me.

However, God not only sees us, He hears us as well. His ears are open to our cries. Again, this reminds me of poor Hagar a number of years later when she is cast out yet again but this time with her son, Ishmael. Eventually, they run out of water, they are at the point of death, and all hope is lost. It is at this point of desperation that the angel of the Lord calls out to Hagar and says, "God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is." Gen 21:17. The Lord heard Ishmael's cries from under the shrubs and God delivered him. It should be noted that the Lord waited until "the water was spent in the bottle." Or as the old hymn says, When we reach the end of our hoarded resources, our Father's full giving is only begun. Over the centuries, the Lord has continued to HEAR the cries of His people in their desperation and distress—time and time again. The Lord still hears our cries even today.

The question that I have is, are we desperate enough?

The Lord's eyes are upon us, friends. His ears are open to us. Believe this today. Feel His gaze upon you. Whisper and know that He hears. Glorify God today in this your faith.

Yesterday we were supposed to have GREG MAZAK with us. He later wrote apologizing for missing the appointment due to conflicting schedules. Yes, it happens. We will try again at a future date. But for today, we're happy to have JOHN GREER from Northern Ireland bring the devotional for our prayer time. As usual, let's come prompty at 12pm EDT and let's be an encouragement to our guest that will labor in the Word.

Matt from Cambodia shared with me this wonderful anniversary reminder:

On a Wednesday fifty years ago, (October 13, 1971), the twin evangelists, Ralph and Lou Sutera, began conducting services at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Saskatoon, Canada at the invitation of pastor Bill McLeod. 150 people attended that first meeting, but numbers swelled each night to 600, then 1,600, then 2,400, leading them to relocated to several locations. Meetings went on late into the evening each night for seven weeks and were marked by a powerful conviction of sin drawing many to Christ for salvation and unrepentant Christians to submit themselves to God and reconcile with one another. What a tremendous work of God!

What brought all this about? Was it the music of these meetings? No. Was it because of the charismatic personality of the preachers? No. Was it the dynamic preaching? No. Reporters in attendance said all of these factors were underwhelming. The answer: it was God coming down in the midst of his people, and he came in response to persistent prayer. What drew such crowds, brought many sinners to Christ, brought such honest confession of sin, such reconciliation among believers, such healing to marriages? What changed the whole atmosphere of a city? What brought scores of young people to Christ, eager to attend Christian colleges to train for ministry? What thrust out several thousand evangelistic teams throughout North America ect. !? . . . It was God coming down in the midst of people, and he came in answer to a simple pastor and his church of about 150 people persistently praying for five years that God would revive them. Such an account should move us in two ways: 1) to praise God for his saving and sanctifying work, and 2) to stir us up to plead with persistence for the Spirit of the Lord to come again with life-giving power on our local congregations day. We cry out with William Cowper, Lord, we are few, but you are near; nor short your arm, nor deaf your ear; O rend the heav'ns, come quickly down, and make a thousand hearts your own.” (Sources and more info on the Sasktoon Revival here).
