This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
"Give us this day our daily bread." Matthew 6:11.
We are, by nature, hoarders. We like to save up and store up for a "rainy day" so that we will have enough and not be found wanting. This is typically a good thing and the Bible actually commends the tiny ant for gathering food in the summer in order to prepare for the winter. But in the spiritual world, the blessings we enjoyed yesterday cannot be "stored up" for tomorrow. There is no such thing. It is more like the manna that fell from heaven each day—sufficient for that day. In fact, when the children of Israel tried to gather more and save it for the next day, "it bred worms, and stank" (Ex 16:20). So they had to gather the manna afresh every single morning. And we understand this only too well in our own spiritual lives. The victories we enjoy with the Lord in prayer even as recently as yesterday will not help us today. We need to ask the Lord to give us this day our daily bread.
I suppose the reason we like to hoard anything is because it keeps us in control. It is, essentially, a lack of faith and even carnal slothfulness. It's hard to trust the Lord each day. It's hard to seek His face each and every day. It's much easier to do something once and "make it last" for a week. As an aside, this is why I'm not a big fan of email devotionals being written or daily podcasts being recorded days or weeks in advance only to be sent out little by little over the course of time. I like to know that the thing I'm reading came from the person's heart that very moment. That's just by the way. I do believe that our day-by-day dependence on the Lord for that spiritual bread from heaven is an exercise of our faith that pleases the Lord greatly. Let us, therefore, seek Him one more day. Even today.
