This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
"Shew me a token for good." Psalm 86:17.
This was the cry of a few men last night. Once again, we met as a group of five from 9:30pm to 1:30am and this was our earnest prayer. Time took wings as I believe the Lord met with us. We came together as weary men without any plan or inclination to pray a certain way. But by the time we left, we were all changed. Something was ... different. When Hannah met with God in prayer, she returned home a changed woman as 1 Samuel 1:18 says, her countenance was "no more sad," even though her circumstances had not changed one iota. She was still barren. But she met with God in prayer and she knew the answer was on the way. The same thing could be said of Jacob when he wrestled all night with the angel of the Lord until the breaking of day and walked away from that encounter a changed man—even though, again, his circumstances had not changed. What made the change? An encounter with the Lord in prayer and an assurance of being heard in heaven. This is the only way I can describe what we enjoyed last night. Nothing has changed. This morning, I woke up and the sun still came up as before. But there's a sense in which everything has changed. Because we met with the Lord and we were assured of an answer. May God show us a token for good. Just a token. Just a small reminder that He is hearing our prayers. This is what we ask and I trust we will receive the answer soon.
Friends. The 300+ people who receive this email, I would ask that you also join us in prayer. The burden of prayer should not be left to a few. We all need to put our shoulder to the plough and labor. Don't be a spectator. Don't even be an anonymous caller. I would encourage you to put your name on the Zoom call, turn on your camera, and let's get serious about this RESOLUTION OF UNITED PRAYER. Last night, out of the five men who were present, two were much younger. We all prayed differently but we all pulled together and engaged in earnest prayer. The Zoom prayer meeting does not allow for everyone to pray audibly. But let's make sure that our hearts at least are fully engaged in earnest prayer, audibly or not. We must be vigilant in guarding against spiritual entropy. God, help us.
