This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened." Gen 7:11.
There was a specific year, month, and day in Noah's life when the windows of heaven were opened. Obviously, this is a record of an actual flood that took place in ancient history. But the Bible does use that descriptive phrase in another place in Malachi 3:10 where the Lord is challenging His people to prove Him to see whether or not He will open to them the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing so that there shall not be room enough to receive it. What a promise! The immediate context of this verse relates to the bringing of our tithes to finance God's work. But it goes much further than that. The Lord doesn't need our money as He owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10), but it is a test of our obedience and faith. When we are willing to give of our wealth to the Lord, the heart should follow close behind. So that ultimately we are bringing ourselves, our hearts, our bodies, as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is our reasonable service (Romans 12:1). Heaven has windows, and when they are open, all the bounty and riches of heaven are poured out upon earth. This is the great need of the hour. The Lord needs to open to us the windows of heaven. And just as in Noah's day, the flood waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth (Gen 7:19) so that every high hill was covered, even so we need such an outpouring of God's Spirit and blessing so that there is not room enough to receive it. Even as we read in 2 Chronicles 5:14, "So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God." God's blessing needs to prevail exceedingly upon the earth! This is what happens when God opens the windows of heaven. The earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea (Hab 2:14). Oh! May it be so. Let us PROVE the Lord. Let us put GOD FIRST. Let us SEEK FIRST the kingdom of God. And may there be a year, month, and day in the timeline of our lives when the windows of heaven will be opened to us as well!
