MacArthur Disappointed in Churches Shutting Down
John MacArthur, lead pastor of Grace Community Church Sun Valley, California, recently made waves by announcing his church would remain open despite the second round of closures ordered by the state government of California. Over the weekend, MacArthur doubled down on his position and said he’s not “nervous” about the situation the church is in. Rather, he sees the whole thing as an “incredible opportunity” to be the church during this trying time.

“What is disappointing to me is how few churches are standing up. How few large churches or even Christian leaders are willing to say ‘We’re not going to bow to Caesar. We’re going to serve our Lord,'” MacArthur said during an update video posted to the church’s account.

“Large churches are shutting down until—they say January,” MacArthur said incredulously. “They don’t know what a church is and they don’t shepherd their people,” MacArthur added. ...

"Now if a deadly epidemic strikes, we should stay where we are, make our preparations, and take courage in the fact that we are mutually bound together (as previously indicated) so that we cannot desert one another or flee from one another. First, we can be sure that God’s punishment has come upon us, not only to chastise us for our sins but also to test our faith and love — our faith in that we may see and experience how we should act toward God; our love in that we may recognize how we should act toward our neighbor.
I am of the opinion that all the epidemics, like any plague, are spread among the people by evil spirits who poison the air or exhale a pestilential breath which puts a deadly poison into the flesh. Nevertheless, this is God’s decree and punishment to which we must patiently submit and serve our neighbor, risking our lives in this manner as St. John teaches, “If Christ laid down his life for us, we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” [1 John 3:16]
When anyone is overcome by horror and repugnance in the presence of a sick person he should take courage and strength in the firm assurance that it is the devil who stirs up such abhorrence, fear, and loathing in his heart." (Martin Luther) (Whether one may Flee from Deadly Plague)

Satan is is sitting happy w/this harmless virus that our Saviour is allowing him to use to deceive us along w/blm morons. John Mac is only following in Paul's footsteps to perform the great commission at his advancing age. Even if it's the last majestic thing he does for the Lord. As for me going against Ceaser is a small compared to what my Saviour, Jesus Christ did on calvery for all sinners. Where I spend my eternal life and obedience to God is first than being afraid of a flu virus, compared to seasonal flu virus is weak. N it seems like the dems found a trump card with this one. Get it? . "Trump" card.

Dear Adriel, Do be careful of the things that you say. No doubt in past plagues, faithful pastors and members of church congregations did die, as they continued to meet, tended to the sick, and preached the gospel faithfully.

Yes, the leftists, who admire Communist China, where this virus came from, would love to see what you formulated and would rejoice. They want the world to continue indefinitely in total lockdown while they smash the economy, destroy the church, impose universal mask wearing, then compulsory mandatory vaccination with aborted foetus vaccines, and rNA that changes the DNA, and also invisible but scannable marker chip id and then get the world ready for the great globalist “reset”, (huge conference coming up of world globalists in Davos, Switzerland, in January 2021, just as they had a preparatory pandemic conference in New York City in October 2019).

Meanwhile, as in Acts 3, 4, and 5 in two occasions, the apostles Peter and John stood up clearly and preached the gospel, and refused to stop meeting and teaching, though threatened by the authorities. The church today must do the same.

Yes I take your point.
It's just that I can't get it out of my little brain that the virus in its original form was created by God.
Admittedly sin has changed it from being in a 'good' form to a 'bad' form, - thus the connection with God is broken at that point.
A very testing phenomenon? anomaly?
I wonder what everybody would say if MacArthur died of Corona virus in a few weeks time?
Brother, is this following scenario possible:-

Isaiah 53:4 KJV
(4)  Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

I checked a lot of different Bibles and the word we translate 'griefs' in the KJV, is variously translated in other versions:

griefs, sicknesses, suffering, infirmities, weaknesses, troubles, pains, illnesses, and diseases.

Isaiah 53:5 KJV
(5)  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Maybe the imputation of sicknesses to Calvary could save Johnny Mac and a whole lot of others, if there was faith to believe it.

It's interesting that Dr. Rugh during his evening service last Sunday night, point it out how much he respected John MacArthur--and their doctrine is almost in lockstep anyway; he still out it's up to
It's up to every Church and its board of Elders to determine what to do. The IFB churches do not have a Pope ❗ 👍

Oh, and Indian Hills Community Church is basically open and has in person services.

Anyway, above snippet was taken from a good article in Christianity Today.

It's the usual thing, same old, same old. The majority will ignore the radical side of Christianity, preferring to live a quiet life without any jail time.
Johnny Mac has gone up in my estimation one hundredfold, and may the Lord bless his heart and keep him.
Matt 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."

Hey Pilgrim excellent comment! I agree with you about MacArthur. He is somewhat controversial because he is unafraid to opine on any subject and of course some of his thoughts are not the same as the mainstream. Brother, I feel as you do, and I believe the Lord will make use of his servant in whatever way he wishes.

I heard a fiery 11 minute message from a pastor in California (originally of Middle Eastern origin), who has opened his church up, but whose friend, another pastor in a neighbouring county has been threatened by the local Health Department as a “nuisance” and a “health danger” for holding in person services and meetings in his church.

John Mac Arthur has also obtained superb legal advice to deal with any threats from the local authorities. Meanwhile, here in England, a whole variety of new indoor areas and places now require the wearing of masks, as from Saturday, including churches and places of worship, ( the few that are open that is). Singing is of course, (except for a single soloist behind a screen), still banned. This interference by the state in worship is completely iniquitous, particularly when certain other crowded occasions are not only allowed, but positively encouraged!! I will not wear a mask in public worship of God, even if that means I stay outside the church.

If a pastor truly believes his church should meet in person, then he should defy the ordinances against that and open up his church. But, if his members disagree with him, they should defy his directives. I am one as you know that believes in the priesthood of the individual members of the body of Christ. This paragraph is of course more complicated than I am making it.

Good morning, everybody. Pray for the Lord’s blessings to be on you and you are a light to those in darkness.
The church I attend is open and our pastor preached by live streaming to those who for different reasons cannot attend. His message one Sunday was basically that we need the fellowship and he is not afraid of catching virus and dying so he carries on with faith and using common sense. SSCLASS opens this month but leaves the decision to attend with the ones that are comprised with health issues.
I noticed the Billy Graham thread closed after only 48 comments but another is still open after 200

I read a separate article about how some people won't want to go back even if some of the closed churches do open. Church attendance will go down because of Covid, but those who remain are more committed to obeying Christ which can only be a good thing.
