Virus pulls federalism debate into 21st Century
Woodrow Wilson did not address the nation on the subject of the pandemic of 1918-19 a single time. He did not call for Congress to act, and he did not summon the nation to unite. He had another battle to fight in trying to bring World War I to a close, even though the flu killed far more people.

While his posture on the flu seems passive, even reckless, in a modern light, Wilson’s approach to war demonstrated an entirely different view of federal power than President Donald Trump’s approach to the current pandemic. Wilson fully exploited the authority of the federal government, compelling rationing, propaganda and nationalizing the railroads, all directed at defeating Germany, not the virus.

The country, after all, was already accustomed to 100,000 deaths a year from the flu. There was a limited public health infrastructure. Use of vaccines remained uncommon, and therapies were often primitive. ...

The pressure to make this a federal issue is enormous, and the federal government is stepping up. But the feds don't have massive stockpiles of everything anyone could need in a crisis.

Cuomo has twisted the truth several times in the press conference snippets that has made it our way. He wants desperately to discredit the President. Not a man to be trusted.

And as the disaster rises in severity, one has to wonder if NYC, a (perhaps not the) Whore of Babylon, will come crashing down. Seems to me that the Lord is sending a message to everyone...repent and believe now. Sadly, many will gnash their teeth and refuse.

Just don't ask Cuomo where the ventilators are.

Jim, there are three Republicans in New York City, so, yes, technically, two would be an overwhelming majority.

Is there someone Americans can look to for guidance, for an example and for leadership at a time like this?

•David Brooks:
Yes, well, Tony Fauci, Francis Collins, the head of NIH.
A lot of the state and local — the governors have been pretty fantastic.

•Mark Shields:
Yes.
Tony — Andrew Cuomo.

•David Brooks:
Yes, Andrew Cuomo.
And so I do think there are some leaders out there. And look to each other. I mean, as everyone has said, it's quite remarkable how the country has responded, responded with all the social distancing and all the very drastic measures that have been taken....

I picked the more tame section of of the Shields and Brooks conversation David Brooks was particularly blunt for his usual self. So, you have been warned!

Wow, Mike, it reminds you of somebody else also doesn't it⁉️

Yes, Adriel, Shields and Brooks did point out that this crisis has been left to others.

""He did not call for Congress to act, and he did not summon the nation to unite.""

Perhaps he left the common people to make decisions in and around their own situations!!!

Wow!!!

Thats far too democratic for society to be provided with such liberty!!!

Today politicians (rhetorically) refer to democracy, - But never never put it into their politics.

It appears that the Governors are going to have to do a lot more work, and not depend on the federal government. Many people are beginning to notice that. For example:

"87% of New Yorkers approve of his handling of the coronavirus crisis, including an overwhelming majority of Republicans"

The Siena College poll quoted says 71%, not 87%. The 87% is "the public" meaning who knows what, if anything? You have to understand, Cuomo is running for president. Most New Yorkers not jammed in the gigantic sardine can of New York City can see through Mr. Cuomo. He isn't in the news daily for information dispensing, but to be seen. He loves taking credit for the work of others. He just wants to do for Nebraska what he has done for NY. Drive people and businesses away with his taxes and replacing local political control with State. With Joe Biden's flimsy efforts, Cuomo sees an opportunity.

The concept of death being acceptable was much different 100 years ago than it is today. Soldiers in the AEF were firing and facing chemical weapons. Annual epidemics of deadly disease were common here at home. The so-called Spanish 'flu was just another epidemic.

It was also before the concept of "guns and butter" in which war didn't mean a reduction in quality of life thru shared sacrifice. That ended during the LBJ Administration when we were at war in Vietnam while fighting the war on poverty.

Perhaps we see life as less expendable today in some ways, as much as it seems we don't value life as much.

You know why Wilson didn't address the virus? Because it's not his job.

Yes! There were "SLIGHT" differences in history to decision making.
Therefore do the modern conclusions actually realistically compare structurally to make the point relevant??

Little wonder the 'survival of the fittest' theory gained in popularity at this time, as the virus knocked off the weak people in society.
