Putin’s new amendments revere God, ban same sex marriages
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday submitted a slew of new proposed amendments to the country’s Constitution that include a mention of God and describe marriage as a heterosexual union.

Putin first proposed amending the constitution in January’s state-of-the-nation speech, saying it is necessary to broaden the powers of parliament and to bolster democracy. Kremlin foes have described the proposed changes as part of Putin’s efforts to remain in charge after his current six-year term ends in 2024.

The Kremlin-controlled parliament quickly endorsed Putin’s draft in the first of three required readings last month, and is set to give it the final approval next week, setting the stage for a nationwide vote on April 22. ...

Mikhail Khodorkovsky was the richest Russian, and the world’s richest person under 40, until Putin’s 2003-2005 destruction of him, in a fraudulent judicial process, on bogus charges of fraud and tax evasion. This episode, the hinge of recent Russian history, taught the rest of Russia’s elite, who had grown fabulously wealthy in the 1990s by buying and plundering former state enterprises, this lesson: Russia’s private sector was only provisionally private, subject to Kremlin whims....

Belton says that “by 2012 more than 50 percent of Russia’s [gross domestic product] was under the direct control of the state and businessmen closely linked the Putin.” Belton calls the takeover of Russia’s political, economic and legal systems by Putin and other KGB alumni “hybrid KGB capitalism.” But state-directed capital allocation actually is crony socialism....

Just to remind you the personal characteristics of Putin❗👎

Kathy Gilsinan and Yasmeen Serhan wrote:
U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May chose the bold course Monday of, essentially, and provisionally, accusing Russia of “unlawful use of force” on British territory. In a remarkable speech to the House of Commons, she addressed the disturbing case of Sergei Skripal, the former Russian spy who was found last week alongside his daughter, Yulia, on a park bench in a catatonic state. The pair, as well as a police officer who responded to the scene, remain in critical condition after being exposed to what May described as a “weapons-grade nerve agent of a type developed by Russia.” The case had echoes of the poisoning of another former Russian spy, Alexander Litvinenko, who died in the U.K. in 2006 after drinking tea that was laced with polonium—an assassination that was later traced to Russia, and in retaliation for which Britain expelled some Russian diplomats....

He [Putin] said U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt serving four terms because of the upheaval his country was going through at the time was an example of why presidential term limits were sometimes superfluous.
“In conditions when a country is experiencing such shocks and difficulties, of course ... stability is perhaps more important and must be a priority,” he said, adding that Russia was still recovering from the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union....

Putin's example is amusing❗ Franklin Roosevelt what was the reason that Republicans push for the amendment to the Constitution to allow only two terms. Putin wants to do the reverse so he can be dictator for life.👎

What nonsense, Timothy. England had pointed out Putin was the cause of the death of people or near death. Where is your proof that Hillary ever did any such thing?

So Jim, it appears that Putin promotes morality while murdering his opponents, and the Clintons embrace immorality and likewise bump off people who cross them. Three peas in a very rotten pod if you ask me.

Alexis Mrachek and Shane McCrum wrote:
1 Putin often invokes the Russian Orthodox Church in his public speeches, giving the church a much more prominent place in Russian political life.

2 Putin has set himself up as a defender of traditional morality—for instance, by opposing homosexuality, penalizing divorce, and supporting the “traditional family.”

3 Putin’s use of traditional Christianity is calculated for political effect. American and European observers would do well to see through the charade.

Many conservative figures in America, including Pat Buchanan and Franklin Graham, have been attracted to Putin’s rhetoric, with its heavy emphasis on traditional Western-Christian values and its seeming rejection of the culture of “degradation and primitivism,” which Putin says has produced “a moral crisis in the West.”

Putin has cleverly cast himself as a belligerent in the culture war....[ ❗]

I wonder if any of the amendments restrict abortion, which I think is legal and common in Russia, as it is in Cuba.

""Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday submitted a slew of new proposed amendments to the country’s Constitution that include a mention of God and describe marriage as a heterosexual union.""

I doubt whether Comrade Bernie Sanders will be this "religious" if he gets into the White House.
Just isn't Democrat policy.

I loved the comment that Putin had been in power for “ 20 decades”, and this from Stars and Stripes. If Putin was to change Russian culture, he needs to change his abortion laws and lower his alcohol abuse rates. Russian birth rate is and will be the lowest of all countries forever. They will not recover, communism ( socialism by force), put a nail on your coffin.

Jim doesn’t care what Putin does, Carl. He just wanted to say something bad about Donald Trump. As usual, our naughty neighbor in Nebraska is being as shallow as a saucer.

Jim, do you or do you not condemn Putin for wanting to ban homosexual marriages and affirming that marriage should only between heterosexual adults?

Don't people proof read anything anymore before they publish it?
"The 67-year-old Russian leader has been in power for more than 20 decades, making him the nation’s longest-serving leader since Soviet dictator Josef Stalin." 20 decades? How can you be 67 and rule for 200 years?

Julia Ioffe wrote:
....’s hard to say Putin is a killer. Putin hasn’t technically killed anyone himself. He didn’t personally fire bullets into journalist Anna Politkovskaya and he didn’t personally drop bombs on children in Aleppo. He just issues general orders that make these things so. When it comes to eliminating domestic opposition, Putin comes from a long tradition, maintained by his native KGB and its forebears, of ensuring that political dissent remains a mortally dangerous proposition. Yet despite these roots, he is not a very bloody ruler, at least not by Russian standards. He has not sent millions to the Gulag or, like Stalin, signed in red pencil kill lists thousands of names long.

Rather, he has created an atmosphere in which his minions—like Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov or young nationalist punks or even uniformed officers of the state—can kill with impunity....

Hmmm. I guess we will do the same worldwide in the Millennium:

And the one overcoming and keeping My works until the end, I will give to him authority over the nations, and he will shepherd them with a rod of iron, as the vessels of the potter are broken in pieces—just as I also have received from My Father.
