Benedict openly defends clerical celibacy as Francis considers married priests
Retired Pope Benedict XVI has coauthored a new book defending the Catholic Church's practice of a celibate priesthood, in a shocking move that comes as Pope Francis is considering the possibility of allowing older, married men to be ordained as priests in the Amazon region.
According to excerpts from the volume released Jan. 12 by the conservative French outlet Le Figaro, the ex-pontiff says he could not remain silent on the issue as Francis is contemplating the move, which was requested by the bishops from the nine-nation Amazon region at October's Vatican synod gathering.
The book is co-written with Cardinal Robert Sarah, the head of the Vatican's liturgy office. It is to be released in France Jan. 15 and carries the title Des profondeurs de nos cœurs ("From the Depths of Our Hearts)....
There is actually nothing wrong with celibacy. There are some great missionaries, pastors, and so on who were unmarried, and of course, the apostle Paul, and our Lord Himself, also Elijah and Elisha the great Old Testament prophets.
What is wrong is compulsory or enforced celibacy, (forbidding to marry), that is the problem. Unfortunately, in their zeal to oppose Catholicism, many Protestant Evangelicals have fallen foul of the opposite problem, and that is virtually, (though it is usually unwritten in their church constitutions or statements of faith), almost mandating or commanding all pastors, elders, deacons and even ordinary church members to marry.
Most people will and most likely are meant to be married, and a minority will be celibate, but there are single people who have that vocation, and they should be honoured and welcomed in the church as much as the married people, and the celibate men should be eligible for church leadership.
John MacArthur wrote: .... First Timothy chapter 4, listen to what the apostle Paul wrote, “But the spirit explicitly says that in later times, some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron. Men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods, both of which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude, for it is sanctified by means of the Word of God in prayer.” And what Paul wrote here is this. Those who forbid marriage are advocating a doctrine of demons. They are listening to deceitful spirits. They are hypocritical liars whose consciences have literally been scarred so that they’re past feeling.
...the Scripture associates celibacy, forbidding marriage, with Satan and I really believe that’s true. I believe Satan has managed to take control of the Catholic system.... ....
