A Redding professor and author has a New Year's resolution suggestion for you, to memorize the bible.
He has 20 books committed to memory.
"And as we start the new year, many of us are looking to maybe put off things that aren't really the best and put on things that are good for us. And one of the best things for Christians to put on, is the memorization of the bible," Tom Meyer said.
Shasta Bible College Professor Tom Meyer, also known as the "Bible Memory Man" teaches the only accredited course on bible memorization, in the country....

Before my head injury, I was a member of the Navigators at TTU in the way back machine. I was in ROTC and fell among the the navigators . Those boys could memorize the scriptures like nobody‚Äôs business. Their little cards in that brown plastic envelope was always out. I found that the NASB ( 1971) edition was a big help in memorizing scripture. Now a days I need to listen to the same verse over and over , then take to writing it with the same frequency. As J Vernon Magee said ‚Äú you need to meditate on the word of God, like a cow chews it‚Äôs cud‚ÄĚ.
As an illustration, we know a man who has committed to memory large swaths of the Bible and can recall the exact wording of many passages. He also fancies himself some sort of pastor and was able to worm his way into the pulpit of a small and rather desperate church. He has since "grown" the church down to a nubbin' thru his personal attacks and poor personal testimony. But he sure "knows" his Bible. Just like Satan...
John MacArthur wrote: .... Today, people all over the world can own and study the Bible in their own languages. That great blessing for Christians brings the responsibility to study God’s Word. And from that study, believers have the joy and duty of representing the Creator and proclaiming His message. Over the previous two weeks we’ve looked at several aspects of how to study the Bible, including:
Placing the proper value on God’s Word.
Reading both the Old and New Testaments.
Interpreting a biblical text before it is applied.
Avoiding common errors of interpretation.
Bridging the gaps between the modern reader and the original author.
Knowing the principles of Bible interpretation.
Those fundamentals, when incorporated into your study of Scripture, will progressively grow your knowledge of God and yourself, and cultivate a well-rounded biblical worldview. It is in His Word that God has chosen to reveal Himself to us in an intimate and saving way. He owns us, knows us, and holds us responsible to know, understand, and proclaim Him on His terms and not our own....
Didn't Krushchev memorize a lot of the Bible (in Russian, no easy language)? He didn't turn out to be a nice fellow at all. And then, I've heard the international championship of Scrabble is usually won by Pakistani or Indians who memorize lots of the words they use (not the 7-letter words you get a bonus for, but small words you can use with a tile or two) but do not speak English. I am still of the opinion that education should be practical, a prep for becoming an adult. I would take parts of the federal tax form 1040 and break it down for kids to practice with during math classes. The page dealing with qualified dividends is a real gem of math instructions...if line 24 is greater than the sum of lines 12 and 13, divided by 8, then...
Dr. Tim wrote: ‚ÄúThy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.‚ÄĚ Memorizing scripture hides it in your head, and that‚Äôs good. Meditating on scripture hides it in your heart, and that‚Äôs great.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary wrote: Psalms 1: ‚Äč1-3 To meditate in God's word, is to discourse with ourselves concerning the great things contained in it, with close application of mind and fixedness of thought. We must have constant regard to the word of God, as the rule of our actions, and the spring of our comforts; and have it in our thoughts night and day. For this purpose no time is amiss.
Memorization without meditation, is much like what the Muslim does when he memorizes a Quran. ūüĎé
Dr. Tim wrote: Praise the Lord, John. Need prayers today for dealing with some crises in the extended family. Thanks.
Brother, I am just out for my prayer walk, although it is very difficult to walk today because of joint pain. Maybe it will ease off the further I go. Notwithstanding, I shall endeavour to believe for great success in your mission, that the mountain will be removed, and all parties will be joyful in the will of God.
Thank you Hugh for bringing out these wonderful truths; every Christian, in every age, needs reminding continually of these things. Thanks again, and Lord bless.
Something I read the other day ‚Äú it is to the Throne of Grace that we come to in prayer and not the Throne of Justice which is a great comfort, at the one my very best is not worthy to be heard, at the other my prayer is completely dependent upon Christ Jesus my Advocate‚ÄĚ
